92 V6 4 runner problem #26635 10/30/02 12:16 AM

I have a 92 V6 4runner with 160k's
After 2 hrs of driving it starts to surge and lose power..the more you try and accelerate the worse it gets.
If I turn the car off and back on it seems fine again.
I have been told by the dealer that it sounded like an auto problem but he was unsure.
The auto seems fine any idea's ?

Electrical/spark problem maybe?

If it was electrical or spark wouldn't I have the problem all the time not just after 2 hrs driving ?

It can't be checked via a computer unless warning lights have come on on the dash (apparently) and I have had no warning lights.

Could be a fuel pump or fuel pump relay problem. I am no mechanic though.

If this is right, how long will it go before the problem returns again? I am leaning to the fuel filter clogging up or some kind of vapor locking problem. But I am no expert either. Have you been buying your gas out in the bush, downunder? Good luck mate

Let me just add on the vapor lock possiblity that I have never heard of this happening with a Toyota but a friend had an early VW Rabbit and they were having this same problem where in the middle of a long trip like 150 miles from home the car would start stalling and die. Well they figure out after sitting on the side of the road for a while that it would start back up and be fine for another 100 miles or so. They figured out it was vapor locking from a vacuum in the gas tank and loosening the gas cap helped get them going faster. Good luck mate

i had a similar problem a while back. my engine was running rough all the time, not just after a while. turned out a spark plug wire had burned through. whenever the wire got close enough to anything metal, it would arc over... leaving no juice for the plug. however my check engine light was on while it was doing this. i'd check your plug wires thoroughly and make sure the wire jacket isnt burnt through anywhere.

I had the same problem (85 5.0 Mustang). It turned out to be the cap on the fuel tank not venting enough. Try loosening the gas cap.

haha mr_goat...no I don't buy my gas in the outback. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
It played up again last weekend and I turned it off for no more than 2 minutes..I did release the fuel cap also as I suspect it could be something like a vapour lock.. and it was fine again for another 1hr.
I'snt the fuel injection system a sealed unit so there can't be a breather type problem ?
