hey ya'll,
I will probably be in the market for a new set of tires in the next year, and i like to start shopping/researching early, so I'm considering a set of MTs, possibly BFGoodrich or Procomp. I currently have BFGoodrich ATs and the lack of traction in mud/damp dirt is incredible. The treads fill up instantly then I just have muddy slicks. ugh...
My question to ya'll is, how loud would procomp MTs be on the road? i had a set of Centurian MTs for a few months on my 88 4R, but the noise was unbearable... they screamed like banshees on the hiway. I could harldy hear my stereo at speeds over 50, and conversation was impossible... Now, I figured that was partly because they were cheap tires and therefore cheaply designed and such, but what was odd was that i bought them from a guy who had them on his 95 grand cherokee. i rode and drove that vehicle on the highways many a time, and hardly even knew he had MTs on it [only noticed the feel of the treads at very low speeds.] I imagine the difference was the suspension vibration absorbtion and noise supression material in the vehicle....
So i wanted to see if anyone else has experianced procomp's or BFGoodrich's MTs in a 86-94 stock suspension toyota... what's your experience with stopping on the street in wet/dry conditions, noise while hiway driving, etc..
thanks in advance. gene

Gene,
I have owned a set of the BFG MT's on a Wrangler and found them to be fairly noisy. I have owned a set of Pep Boys generic mud tires on my 88 truck and they were just as loud as the BFG's. This was not the new KM version but I would imagine they are similar. Next week I am purchasing a set of BFG MT's (33-10.5-15) for my stock 88 runner. I will let you know in a couple of weeks how the handle the wet, etc. I was always careful in the wet with my Wrangler as the tires provided little traction.

Gene, I'm also on the verge of buying new Tires. I keep changing my mind between Bridgestone 32" Duellers AT, 31" AT Revo, and 32" Dueller MT's. I want 32" Tires but I'm to poor do a lift and buy Tires. My Tire guy says 32" AT will fit my 94 4Runner, but 32" MTs might rub. The AT revos come in 31" and 33"' but not 32". What to decide. Here's a link to a review of the MTs by offroad.com: http://www.off-road.com/isuzu/bridgestone.html [ November 04, 2002, 09:47 PM: Message edited by: ringo234 ]

Why havent you considered the Goodyear MT/R's? I had them on my 96 and I was quite impressed by their low noise level. Not bad at all.

I have the bfg mt/km on my truck. Much quieter than the swamper radials I had on before. But still noisier than a highway tire would be. I siped both bfg and swampers which helps alot on wet roads/rocks.
I think the bfg mt/km make a good all around tire.
I've heard good things about the goodyear mtr as well, but they did not come in the size I wanted.

I have been running BFG MT's on my DD for 5 years and just got a new set last month. I don't think they are too noisey at all. Great tire in rain esp hitting standing water at high speeds, very little hydroplaining and I got 50k miles out of my last set (I had them siped too).
93 4X4 ext-cab, auto, SR5, 3.4 V6, supercharged, 2.1" pulley, URD fuel mods, Aquamist WI, IPT valve body mod, dual cases, 4" superlift, Alcan springs, 33 BFG MT, ARB locked front & rear, 5.29 US Gears, RB 1" BL, 1.5" BJ spacers, TJM T-17, Warn m8000.

Bridgestone Dueler MT's are a great compromise tire: for me, they wore very well, were quiet, worked superbly in rain, great in snow, great in dry, and good offroad. They were better in all onroad conditions than either the BFG AT or MT's I had, and the MT/R's I have now. The MT/R's are the best though for offroad and they do work great onroad (we'll see about snow here soon).

GY MTRs kick butt. The guys on GA TTORA told me to shut up about 'em, LOL, but I can still evangelize here: I'm stock, just learning to wheel and these tires are REALLY paying off big, (which is good 'cause I traded Michelin LTXs with 2k miles). They are fantastic off road, and quiet on. From my experience, all "performance" tires stink in the wet, (Saab w/Michelin Pilot Sports)
