If I could afford some down time, I'd go for it myself.

That baby has enough power to keep up with a Tacoma and put any other mini-truck to shame in terms of torque output and fuel mileage. Oh how nice that would be to have.

But all is not lost. JD OZrunner on this board has sold a number of similier diesel engines and imported them here to the states if anyone is interested. So, while some lucky guy might get this one, there are plenty more to be had down the road and it's not that expensive.

I don't think the conversion would be hard. My biggest worry would be getting parts. I'm sure OzRunner could supply any needed parts, but if it breaks down in the middle of nowhere, your not likely find what you need at the local NAPA store.

But the power and gas mileage, sure would be nice.

I vote for Brian Ellinger to make a conversion kit! Hey Brian, think you and Mike could be the first on your block to make this pig fly? You know, get a few, make a kit, use my truck as a test bed, that sort of thing...

GotDamn!! I WANT THAT!! That's the swap I've been dreaming of. And it's cheap as hell right now. Now if I could only find two nickels to rub together.

Looks as though the bell housing is attached, think it would go against an american trans? I see the wiring harnesses, fuse block, and the black box, probably wouldn't be too bad. We'll see where the price is in 4 days.

AFAIK the tranny is the same bolt pattern as ours.

The bellhousing is most likely for an R151 if the tranny was a 5 speed. So, I imagine any R series tranny will bolt up or a W series with the proper bell housing from Australia. The only issue I could see is the fact that it was for a Prado. That would have the same suspension as the Tacoma (I think) which might mean the oil pan is shaped incorrected to fit around the older truck's diff. But since the Hilux, which also has this engine as an option, has the same frame/motormounts/diff as the '86-'95 trucks, finding the proper oil pan, and bolted it all up, shouldn't take more than a weekend. Then there's the wiring, but I imagine if the whole harness is there that's not a problem. The exhaust is on the wrong side, but you could just do what they do on the Hilux and route it under the tranny. And finally the fuel system would have to be changed. Just flush the gas tank and reroute a few lines and your done.

BTW, if I did the conversion correctly, the horse power output is 118hp, which isn't too bad. But, the torque is a whopping 240 ft/lbs at only 1800 rpm!! Add an intercooler and it's much better than that. And gas mileage in the teens will only be a thing of the past. Figure low to high 20s depending on your driving.

I'm so jealous.

Roll Me Over
I tell ya', diesels are great. They just run and run. I'm on my second old diesel benz. The first, a 79 300D, had 360K on it and is still going strong with its new owner. This one has 240K and it's an SD so it's bigger and nicer. There's no mis-fire, no engine codes, all mechanical and I mean all, just a solid cast iron (in this case) engine that's very robust during overheating. This newer ('82) is turbo charged and moves a 4000lb car with surprising quickness given that it's still a diesel. It's break a 100 mph easy.

Hey, there's an idea. Swap a benz diesel in your truck! They are pricey but you'll get 300-400K miles maybe more no problem. They are even 3.0's (5 cyl in my case) and require aboslutely no electricity to run other than to light the glow plugs and turn the starter. These are probably one of the few engines and will outlast a Toy motor. You can install an aftermarket boost controller and run 'em up to 14 psi. I haven't installed mine yet but I've been told they scoot with a jump from stock 9psi to 14.

My car gets gnarly scrath when it's auto tranny shifts to second on wet pavement. It's funny.

Frank.

The bell housing is for a R151F, the guy sent me a picture of it. The clutch is even in that pallet... the exhaust runs on the Taco side, so the slave cylinder line will need an easy reroute.... He will get a small fortune for that thing at the rate it is going - complete conversion. No easy parts = I'll stick with my 20mpg gas turbo, 170ish HP 200++ ft/lbs with much more to come.

That price is climbing fast, imagine it will go for a small fortune. Pretty interesting, though.
