 v6 ignition coil help

The coil on my v6 project rig is crap. There appears to be a seem that the spark has eroded throw. That or dry rot maybe. Were the boot tree and the housing meet the spark is dancing around about 1/2". I JB welded the housing to cover this seem up. But no good. Anyone seen this before? More then likely I'll be better off with a new coil but $150 for a replacement is to high right now. Any recommendations for a lower $$ alternative i.e. rigging in a normal coil if possible?

NAPA has an Echlin replacement coil for $68.99. I have this in my yellow truck and it works fine. Advance Auto Parts has a Niehoff WA769S for $43.99.
My five-year-old still likes to tell people how he replaced the ignition coil in my truck. (he really did it himself with me holding him up on the bumper)

Maybe the spark finds it hard to get where it's supposed to go. I'd check out the cap and rotor, too, as the internal spark gaps (between the rotor and cap) erode and the center carbon button wears (and sometimes breaks). Also check for tracking (black burned streaks) and cracks inside the cap. I don't know what the stock coil throws, but I'd bet it's at least 35k-40k volts to jump those FAT spark gaps, and your standard type coil only gives about 15k or so.
