According to the tech I talked to at Magnuson, it's the same oil for the M90 and M62. He said there's no problem at all with using the GM S/C oil in my TRD S/C. One vehicle that I know came stock with the M90 is the '97-'03 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. I've heard a rumor that the '03 Grand Am GT has the M62 as an option, but I don't know any more than that. I think the XTerra also uses the M62, but they don't have any S/C oil discussions on one of their larger forums. The GM bottle of supercharger oil is not specific for a particular vehicle. It's part # 12345982. It costs $5-6 per 4 oz bottle. Yes, Pontiac dealerships should have it in stock and you should be able to just say you'd like a bottle of supercharger oil without specifying a vehicle. If you can't find it anywhere, you can buy it for $7.50 plus shipping from: ZZ Performance Based on what's been previously posted at a popular Grand Prix forum ( www.gp-owners.com), the S/C oil is a different animal from just synthetic motor oil. The S/C oil has foaming agents while motor oil has anti-foaming agents. And some people say motor oil ate through their S/C seals after they tried it for a while. So I'd stick with the real S/C oil. The hard part is finding something to suction out the old oil (Windex pump head, orthodontic syringe...) I wonder if AmsOil offers a SuperCharger oil??? I need to place an order with them right now anyway. -S

I've written to AmsOil asking them if they offer a suitable oil. I'll post the answer here when I get it.

AMSOIL does not make oil for the supercharger. Just get it from the GM dealer for $6. I really don't think using the fill hole as a fill level is a good idea. I just changed the oil in one of my superchargers last week. It takes for ever to shake out the oil in the supercharger, I have the Gen 1. The 4 oz of oil was no where near the file hole. Get it all out and then put in 4 oz. You guys with the right side up supercharger can do it with the supercharger installed. I have heard that a R/C Model airplane fuel fill pump works good for sucking out the oil oil. Gadget www.GadgetOnline.com

The 4 oz of oil was no where near the file hole. I've heard another person say the same thing. I definitely remember the guy at Magnuson specifically said to use 4 oz., but I thought he also said fill it to the bottom of the hole which turns out to be 4 oz. I have heard that a R/C Model airplane fuel fill pump works good for sucking out the oil. Thanks for the idea. I'll look for one of those. I still don't have a good method of sucking all of it out.

I bought a Mityvac @ Advance Auto for about $30 to bleed my brakes. It also works great for suctioning out the old oil.

Jeff,
You mentioned that the old oil looked like Pepsi. What color was the new oil? Could you tell if your original oil was significantly dirty?
I am moving to Virginia this Friday and am planning on changing the oil. Also, do I need to get a fresh drain plug, or a crush washer? I don't want to not have all the parts I need on hand before draining.
Thanks!

The new oil is almost clear with a slight yellowish tinge if I remember correctly.
No, you don't need a replacement drain plug or crush sleeve since it doesn't have those. Make sure you have something to suction it out, though. When I went to an R/C model store, they didn't have a fuel suction pump available, but did have the plastic suction thingamabobs used for mixing small amounts (drops) of hobby paint to mix your own color. That looked like it might work too, but I'm not sure. That's just another possibility.

How difficult is it to change the s/c oil on the 1st gens? Mine is a 99, S/C was installed at the dealer before I took delivery and I'm just turning 60k. If it is way involved, maybe I will wait. Just wish it were easier to do as it sounds like a pain to have to remove the entire thing to do the change (who the hell designed it that way! :p)

Gadget and I had this discussion this weekend. He was saying that the superchargers take 150ml, which is just under 5 ounces. He has two of the grey, 1st Gen superchargers. He urged me to call Magnuson and get some more oil to get it up to the proper level. Well, I went back and found this thread and began to wonder which is the real answer, or should I say best answer.
I called Magnuson today and here is what I was told. (I wish I caught the name of the guy I talked to, I think it was Troy or Tony or something similar.) Anyway, I told him what I had and without skipping a beat he said 4 ounces is fine. I explained that one friend said 4 ounces (Jeff the Marmot, with this thread as my source) and another said 150ml, which is just under 5 ounces. He said 150ml or 5 ounces is fine too, but they fill them with 120ml of oil at the factory. Apparently this isn't the first time this guy has heard the 150ml vs 120ml debate/discussion. He told me I am just fine with 4 ounces of fresh oil. To me, the difference between 4 ounces and 5 ounces is significant... it is a 25 percent increase. Regardless of how much fluid we are actually talking about, that is a significant difference. If we were to overfill our engine oil by 25 percent, there would be a good chance we could damage our engines. Oh well. If the garbage men haven't taken it away yet, I'll dig the old oil out and try to measure how much I actually got out of the supercharger.
On to other supercharger news.... Since I had the guy on the telephone, I asked him about how long the service interval was for the nose gear. His answer was that the nose gear wouldn't need service for another 40,000 miles (I told him I already had 40,000 on the charger). He said what is more likely to need servicing is the Front Nose Cover Bearing. It is the bearing directly behind the seal at the front of the supercharger by the belt. Since it has such stress on it because of the belt, I'm not surprised it might need service first. When I asked how long it should go between servicing, he told me it would be rather obvious when those bearings went out. When that happens I could remove the front portion of the supercharger, mail it to Magnuson and for $175 the would do a complete service to include a new oil pack. I guess oil pack means refill....
BTW, when I drained my oil, it looked a nice honey color, not anything close to Pepsi. I am guessing I got out almost all of the 4 ounces they added at the factory.

Good info. I have 100K on my supercharger now so I've been thinking about the nose drive maintenance/overhaul anyway. I see their website is www.magnusonproducts.com so I better get on the ball with this too.
