Just as it says, my power windows are behaving badly! Well really they aren't doing anything! My truck is an 88 4runner. The rear window still works but the two front windows don't respond. It happened all of a sudden. I've looked for a fuse/relay but have yet to find where they are for the front windows. I haven't had a chance to pull the door panels off so if that's where they are hiding that's why I haven't found them. Any ideas (other than chopping them into half doors and making windows for them)? It would be nice to at least have them both up...the drivers side is at half mast while the passenger side is all the way down...not so good when it's raining. Thanks in advance!

I think the '88 may be different, but on my '85, all that is behind the driver's side kick panel: Power window controls

Until you find a cure, you can roll them up using this method: Take your door panels off. Unplug the window motor. The plug will have two contacts. Hook +12v to one and ground the other and the window will move either up or down (assuming that the problem is not the motor, which I doubt it is). Reverse the polarity and the window will move the other direction.
On my 86 4Runner, the relay box is somewhere up under the dash on the driver's side. Also, I believe that there is acutally a circuit breaker (rather than a fuse) for the power windows. That is located behind the driver's side kick panel. You'll see the fuse box, the circuit breakers are attached to the box. The box cover should be labeled to tell you what's what. I'd check that first.

My 86 has the same problems. If you figure out the fix, please let me know! I've done the trick 'CarterMan' mentioned to get them down and it works (so I know it's not the motors on mine). Also, If I'm not mistaken, I believe the circuit breakers are the same for the windows and locks, so if you suspect the CB's you can switch them around. I think mine is the relay, but I haven't messed with it, too busy trying to get this truck running right.

Look behind the passenger kick panel.Just above the ecu is a plastic black box.It has door control or door module printed on it.Take the box apart and check the circuit board for loose connections or burnt spots.Resolder any bad or burnt areas.

Here's what I did...I found the circuit breaker for the windows and ran a line from the power out of the CB straight to the power wire at the window switch and the windows worked. So it is something between the CB and the switch which leaves the relay as the culprit. I tried to follow the power wire from the CB to the relay and I tried to follow the power wire that comes from the relay to the switch back to the relay but the wires go up behind the dash to somewhere that I don't feel like going to.
So here's what I decided to do...I spliced into the wire coming off the back of the circuit breaker so the line is still protected and spliced it into the power wire that goes to the switch on the door (still under the dash). That did the trick.
On my truck there is a white w/red and a blue wire coming off of the back of the window CB. I tapped into the blue wire (it is the one that is supposed to go to the relay). The wire going to the switch is blue w/red. You can follow it from the pack that runs out thru the door jam. That is the power wire for the window switch.
I couldn't find the black box around the ecu on my truck, maybe I'm blind . Anyway, thanks for the help guys!

when i bought my 4 runner i figuried that i would just swap over all my sr5 stuff off of my x-cab well what a pain there are no wires at all on the 4 runner but i have slowly got everything except more doors swaped I did have them on for a short time and made some wires work but was not happy so one of these days when i have nothing to do i will tear deep in the x-cab and get the harness out for the doors I just put up the cool map light had to take the head liner down to put in the wires and bracket but now it looks like it came from the factory with it

I feel pretty stupid... I just remembered that on my 86 4Runner there is no power window relay or ecu! I don't know why I thought that there was.
Anyway, your 88 may be different, but on mine, the switches in the door handle all the current for the window motors. I actually re-wired mine to use relays so that my windows go up and down faster.
