I always put the transfer case in neutral and the tranny in gear.. then I let out the clutch or give it a bit of pedal if an auto... this assures the transfer case to be in neutral.. Then I disconnect the battery and place the KEY to "run" to disconnect the wheel lock And make sure the parkbrake is at ease...and away I go..
