Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey, I'm new here with some (of course) questions.
We're driving (moving) to Albuquerque from Burbank, CA, and I'm debating between driving our 4Runner and Wrangler vs. towing the Wrangler with the 4Runner (with a towbar).
This a bit over the 4Runner's towing capacity, though.
Is there a way to configure the Jeep to brake with the 4Runner? In other words, to set the Jeep up as a braked trailer?
Thanks for all your help!

Some thoughts:

1. If I remember correctly a '93 YJ does not have a "true neutral", even when the xfer case is in "N". Plus there are some issues with the xfer case properly oiling when flat towing.

2. Brakes, yes you will need brakes to be hooked up. In most jurisdictions it is required for trailers or towed vehicles over 1500 lbs.

3. For more info on both tow bars and brakes for the towed vehicle check out Blue Ox Products. http://www.aemfg.com/ They have a reputation as one of the best in the business. They are not cheap.

4. Be very careful when towing vehicle and towed vehicle's weights are close. It is not recommended.

Hope this helps.

Lawrence

Ok, doing this again.

Lost the 4Runner, still have the Jeep. This time I'm planning to flat-tow the YJ behind my Penske moving truck from Albuquerque, NM to Durham, NC.

Do you guys have any advice on this setup? T-case in N, tranny in N?

Thanks!

I always put the transfer case in neutral and the tranny in gear.. then I let out the clutch or give it a bit of pedal if an auto... this assures the transfer case to be in neutral.. Then I disconnect the battery and place the KEY to "run" to disconnect the wheel lock And make sure the parkbrake is at ease...and away I go..

Thanks Big Jim!

Is there an easy way to hook up the brake/signal lights? I have a harness to plug into the truck, is there easy access to connect it to the lights?

No there is NOT! It is a ***** no matter how you do it!
My towbar has an extended 4-way wire with a plug on the front for the tow vehicle and another on the back for the towed!
The towed also has a wire from under the hood to under the drivers seat.. with matching plugs on each end.
Then near the drivers seat the factory wires are CUT and matching plugs placed on each part.
So when not being towed these last 2 plugs are joined allowing normal lighting. Then when being towed the plugs are seperated and the one from the tow vehicle is joined to give the lectric signal from the tow vehicle to the back lights only..
Might take a few to injest this but it is what I do.

Thanks all for your help.

Made it safely, got a pretty nice towbar and magnetic taillight setup from UHaul, installed myself (simple matter of drilling a couple of holes in the bumper). No problems at all.
