runs 3 seconds then dies #289489 07/21/03 06:39 PM

1991 22RE motor...
Problem started out as having to crank twice before starting.
Then random hesitation while driving started, and became worse.
During cold days, I had to crank 20-25 times to start (starter cranks fine).
The gas filter was changed, the fuel system pressure was tested ok.
Finally after replacing the Throttle Positioning Sensor (for some reason, mechanic has a separate wire running from TPS to computer), things appeared back to normal....but after a few days, a hint of hesitation and more than one crank needed to start reappeared (but no where near as bad as previous times).
One day, the truck would not start at all. Checking out the fuel pump (because I previously had it rebuilt, and had suspicions), I discovered a severed rigid line on the output of the pump, so fuel was being pumped out, but hitting the flange and falling back into the tank - no wonder it wouldn't start.
After repairing the rigid line and reassembling, I cranked the motor, and to my surprise, it started up right away!
Unfortunately this only lasted for about 3 seconds, then the motor died.
Many attempts to start after this gave the same results - it would start up fine, run good, but only to die within a few seconds (pumping or playing with gas pedal made no difference)
I replaced the fuel pump, and have the same symptoms.

Reading about a similar problem on here, I jumpered the Fp and B+ terminals, and no difference.
I'm looking at the Air Flow Meter, but unsure how to check (it has 7 pins).

Terry

Body Damage is Cool
It could be the AFM. Out of curiosity, I unplugged mine and tried starting my 4Runner to see what would happen. It starts up and runs for a few seconds, then dies as you have described. I don't know how to test it, but if you get the wiring diagram for it you should be able to figure it out. You could have a bad connection, or broken wire between the AFM and the computer too.

Here's another idea. I got water in my computer and my 4Runner would start and run really bad for a short period of time then die. Each time I tried starting it it ran for a shorter and shorter period of time until finally it wouldn;t start at all unless I let it sit for a while. I dried the computer out and it worked fine.

Have you checked your codes?

Well I have a basic diagram for testing resistance values of the AFM, but unsure if the pins are numbered 1-7 from driver to passenger side, or opposite, or whether they're not even sequential?

Very interesting on your same results with AFM unplugged.
Unfortunately I don't have a manual.

As for the water possibility....the truck has been sitting for a few weeks, so would assume the computer is plenty dry if that was the original problem.

One other thing I should mention....I've removed the EFI fuse for a few mintues to reset that.

How do I check the codes?

You could try bypassing the AFM with the fuel pump test jumper. If this lets the engine run, its likely the AFM fuel pump contact that is bad.

Well it looks like the problem was the AFM. After swapping with a friend (1989 4 runner), the motor fired up and kept running!
I've never had one apart, but had a suspicion about mine when I manually activated the air vane inside and only saw it move 1/4". After taking it apart, I noticed the arm was leaving contact #1 and jamming on #2....so the fuel pump contacts were not closing. I just had to bend the arm and contacts back into position, and now the vane moves like it should, and the fuel pump is triggered properly!
Thanks to everyone who was part of this thread...sure glad I stumbled onto this site.
