Your friend's '96 probably has the same console as my '97. If so, the cupholder is underneath the arm rest pad. In order to use it you have to have nothing in the storage space and leave the armrest pad up. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

At least the '98 and up have the cup holders where they are functional.
