See if the dashpot between the secondary barrel and the valve cover holds vacuum. If not, the secondary throttle plate won't open, and you'll have a very weak engine. It's a flying saucer thingy with a single vac line connection. The secondary has a mechanical interlock in the mechanical linkage, so it won't open unless you hold the throttle fairly wide open if you want to check for stickiness in the action, too. You can apply vacuum by mouth or with a hand held vac pump, like a Mighty-Vac, which can be bought for about $40 at parts houses, and usually includes a one man brake bleeding kit with it - quite a handy little gizmo. Test the dist. vac advance can while you're playing around.

i'll have to look under the hood again in the morning (with my 88 service manual in hand) to see about the green hose from the vacuum switch you refer to
about the other hose connected to nipple 3, i'm certain it connects to the top nipple on the 6-sided-thing-a-ma-jig ... it could be that one of my mechanics in the past year moved the hoses to where he thought they should be, but i doubt it ... maybe others will chime in
btw, if you have other immediate questions, ask them tonight and i'll try to look at my carb again in the morning ... after that i'll be wheelin in Livingston, KY all weekend and won't be able to post back until Sunday night
had an '88 Montero, then an '04 Rubicon ... sold 'em tho

the green hose on the device box leads to the six-sided-thing-a-ma-jiggy
this 6-sided thang has five hoses connected, two on the left (toward the front of the rig), two on the right (toward the back) and one on top
the green hose from the device box connects on the left (toward the front) to the nipple closest to the drivers side
if i numbered them like this with 3 being the top one, then it would be nipple 2:
1 4 3 2 5
i hope this helps
i'll have to answer any further q's after i get back from wheeling at Livingston, KY
archive ?

I tried to email the diagram to you, but the send failed. I suspect the file attachment size is too large at 1.7mb, because it grew by about 100% when I converted it to jpeg. I'll try to zip.exe it and send again. I get dizzy trying to trace out the various vac states at various thermo vac valve states. Starion system is MUCH simpler - it only makes me sea sick. Once you trace through it, it seems that 90% of the functions accomplished are to stop egr flow at idle and when the engine's cold. I prefer tapping the egr valve inlet port or preferrably at the exhaust port side to avoid additional head heating) and damming it up with a dang plug.... If I only had a TIG welder (and knew how to use it)!
