Need a Spot
I am trying to "restore" a 1988 Raider and I am not sure where all the vacuum hoses to the carb go. I have the service manual and have looked at Huysman's diagrams for an 87, but there are some differences and I need some help.

Does anyone have complete vacuum diagrams for an '88 auto, non-California, non-high altitude Raider? Or is anyone willing to help me out if I e-mail specific questions?

Thanks

Michael

I've got the 89 manual page scanned (89 & 88 should be the same, and I've got an 88 manual somewhere, too if you still have problems), but your profile doesn't show an email add. You can PM me with any questions, or post them here.

aren't the vacuum diagrams on the underside of the hood?

Here's one of my specific questions, which the manual diagrams and the diagram under the hood do not clearly address:

If you look at the carb from the driver's side, on the upper half of the carb, there are 5 nipples. From L (front) to R (rear), I think the first nipple (which is at the end of an exposed tube) is the secondary bleed nipple (capped), the second nipple is primary bleed nipple (capped), and the fifth nipple is from the dashpot and throttle opener and this is connected to the throttle opener control solenoid valve.

What are the third and fourth (fourth above third) nipples, and which one should be connected to the vacuum switch (I presume the remaining one is capped)?

Could anyone help me out here. My vehicle hesitates on initial acceleration, and obviously my first step is to get all the vacuum hoses correct.

Thanks again.

Body Damage is Cool
i have the 88 service manual (thanks , again, DougH !) ... it has 82 pages on the fuel system ... i'd be glad to photocopy page 14-43 (Vacuum Hose Diagram - Federal Except High-Altitude Vehicles) and mail it to you if you'd like (sorry, i don't have a scanner)

i compared your description with my manual and my rig ... you are correct about the nipples you list as 1,2,5

you are also correct that nipple 4 is capped

nipple 3 has a hose that winds down and connects to the top nipple of the six-sided thing-a-ma-jig (i'm still searching for the correct name of this doo-hicky) with five hoses connected to it ... this six-sided thingy with the five hoses connected to it is exactly 5 1/2 inches straight down below nipple 5

i hope this helps

had an '88 Montero, then an '04 Rubicon ... sold 'em tho

BTW - while you are playing with vacuum lines try putting some vacuum on the secondary throttle diaphragm to make sure that works - it's a common failure on the Mikuni's resulting in lack of power.

Thank you all - I do have the 1988 service manual. But now I am a little confused - you have nipple 3 going to the top of the 6-sided thing-a-ma-jig (this IS the correct name), but the FBC system diagram in the manual shows the top of the 6-sided thing-a-ma-jig going to the coolant temperature sensor (same also on Huysman's diagram).

Also then, where does the green line from the vacuum switch (the lower single hose from the device box on the fender) go to? Huysman's diagram shows it going to somewhere on the upper right driver's side of the carb - looks like nipples 3 or 4.

I hate to keep at this but I want to get it right.

Suggestion!
Parouse a junk yard that has a Raider of your year? Easier said than done but if your wrecker has one you never know. Nothing's saying that's correct but it just might be.

You should also see if a dealer around you has one for sale in that engine/year. Look under the hood <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Change your oil hot and often.

Thank you - I did notice that the secondary is clean while the primary is dirty. If vacuum does not open the secondary with the primary open, where are the common problem points and what can I do about them?
