Tire and shocks question for 99 Rodeo #304872 08/21/03 03:36 PM

I need new tires for my '99 Rodeo that I recently started driving from my wife. I am also not happy with the ride and want to get new shocks installed. I need some advise on tire and shocks. This will be an only road driving vehicle, no trails

1. Anyone have any experience with either Yoko Geolanders AT+II or the HT-S?
2. Comments about going with Rancho 5000 shocks
3. Does Pro Comp make shocks for my Rodeo?
4. How much should I expect to pay for shock install?

I think I have narrowed down my tires to the 2 listed, AT are only $10 more at tirerack.com. Ranchos are $150 for 4 and the Pro Comps are about the same but I can't find info it they make them for the Rodeo.

Thanks
Ric.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ric,

For the shock installation, expect to pay the going hourly mechanic's rate. I paid about $80. which works out to about one hour of labor. I don't know about your other questions. For my 2003 Rodeo, I bought stock-size Bridgestone AT Revos, they provide a nice ride and are very quiet on the highway. I've also been very satisfied with their performance in the rain and off-highway in Moab. Good luck.

Mark

Lots of good tires out there and you have some good choices already. On shocks go with the rancho 9000's, the 5000's can be a harsh ride, and don't pay to have them installed. It's an hour job at longest and simple to do. Hit all the bolts with break free or other penetrating fluid a day or two before the change and go to work. It's cake!

thanks guys. I guess I will look into getting different shocks. What about the new rancho rsx? Being a cheap skate, I am looking a cheaper option than the 9000s since getting tires and shocks at once is going to hit the wallet hard.

Tim,
You wouldn't want to come down to my house for a quick shock install for free beer

Body Damage is Cool
Sorry I didn't get to this sooner...

Shocks..dont' do the 5k's unless you don't like your kidneys. If you are sticking to the road, the monroe SensaTracks seem to be a FAVORITE shock over on the SUV.com forums...there's ALOT of rodeo talk over there and the monroe shock wins them hands down for a zero trail use truck. I don't know of a single person that has the RSX's yet...so i can't say anything good or bad about them.
No matter the shock you use, they are CAKE to install and will literally take you about an hour to do in the driveway. the hardest bolt to get to is the top bolt on the rear shocks, a ratcheting wrench works wonders up there...I did it once with a regular wrench for about 4 turns...then borrowed a buddies ratcheting box end...it made super quick work out of the bolts.

As for tires...I used to be a really large fan of the Yoko Geolandar AT+II's. bear in mind that the sidewalls are stiff, and strong. Key assets on the trail. Not so key on the highway. I now have Bridgestone REVO's in a standard load rating 265/75-16 and i have to say they are very awesome on the road. Rain is no problem. From what I read on the TireRack, snow is no problem either. For road use, I'd stick with the REVO. It has a better warranty, very smooth, quiet ride, and its one of the more competitively priced tires. I am a big fan of the Tire rack too, but Firestone/Bridgestone does a 90 days same as cash program that will have you getting tires and shocks and letting you spread out hit of getting shocks at the same time.

Thanks JasonB, great info. After some research, Monroe make the shocks for Pro Comp and I think Gabriel make the ranchos(not 100%). Looks like I will go with the monroe, 4 sensa-tracs for about $130 and I think there's a $25 rebate right now. Great info on the tires and I will look into the Revos.

If I can get some help, I may do the install myself.
Thanks guys and keep the info coming.
