Body Damage is Cool
Hey folks, I'm going to rebuild my (celica) power steering pump this weekend and the factory service manual calls for three different SST's. Two of them look like regular wrenches, and the third looks like I can still do the work without it (or a substitute).

Should I pony up the $800.00 on SST's for a job I'm only going to do once or twice, or just wing it and see what happens?

SST list for the typical home TOYOTA specialist...that means you and I my brother from another mother!

BFH- (aka Big Friggin Hammer) If the job requires pressure applied to it or tapping of some sort.

LASD- (Long Ass Screw Driver) used for prying poking and the occasional stuck oil filter! lol Thicker the better.

PC- (Paper Clip) to be used anywhere a jumper wire is called for. IE: Diagnostic retrieval.

BOW- (Block of Wood) Very adaptive tool, can be used for leverage in unison with the LASD.

Other than that, if you have 10,12,14,17 and 19mm sockets and wrenches and a feeler gauge set you should be good to go and can pretty much dis-assemble the entire engine!

$800 huh? Yeah buddy..pick me up a set too! lol

Tom, I think what he's trying to say is you don't need most of the SSTs specified in the FSM. There is nothing special about a lot of them to begin with (they're regular tools). For others you can substitute something else or do it another way if you understand what the SST is for. Others you can build yourself, like the rear axle bearing removal SST I made.

I agree! most SST's are not nessesary. as Darin mentioned most can be replaced with the ones he listed. although he did miss an important one for those of us in the salt belt.
SST# FW : fire wrench = set of torches, make sure to pair with SST# EX : fire extinguisher
these Fough SST's with make life alot less expensive......Karl <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Thanks guys. I didn't think I'd have to get all the SST's to do this job. Does anyone use belt tension gauges? I've never really changed belts before, it seems kind of important to have the belt at the proper tension...

I go by feel.
If I can wiggle the belts (we're talking alt and PS belts) more than about an inch on the longest span, then it needs to be tightened. If you're worried about it being too tight, go with what feels good and start it up.
If it squeels, tighten it up. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/oink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Hope this helps,
Todd

You forgot another:
SST# DLP
Darn Long Pipe, used with a breaker bar to remove bolts that were torqued by
SST# GHT
Guess How Tight, used when a torque wrench is just too much trouble, or not tightened or loosened for a good long time...

My son informed me they reviewed the safety rules in auto shop. And that most of the things we do in the garage are a violation. Sheesh. First he takes driving school and I become an idiot driver <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />, then he takes auto shop and I become an idiot wrencher <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/oink.gif" alt="" />. Yeah, well, they can have my DLP when they pry it out of my cold dead fingers. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mrt.gif" alt="" />
