ok another question???
I'm looking at o2 sensors and wondering what the difference is other then price...both are bosch...both have 12 month warrenty...both for my kia
type OE @ $169.99 each front/back type universal @ $59.99 each front/back
I'm thinking the universal would be better same warranty but save $110 thats a huge price difference!!.... What makes the OE type worth the extra cost???... Anything/nothing? Universal will save me $220 for the 2!! Heck thats about lift kit!!

Your 1996 has one cat convertor under the driver. Not two as shown in the shop manual. There should be one O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe before the cat, and the second one after the cat.
The universal O2 sensors will work. However, you'll have to follow the instructions and modify the wiring to connect it into the Sportage wiring harness. There will be 4 wires. 2 of them will be for the heater element and it really doesn't matter which way it connects into the heater wires in the harness. It isn't polarity sensitive. The 2 other wires for the O2 sensor itself are polarity sensitive and you must connect them properly or it won't work.
Also, and I'm thinking on the fly here. If you are getting slow response from BOTH O2 sensors you may want to check out the heater wiring. There are O2 sensor fuses in the fuse panel on the driver's side kick panel. Then check the wiring as shown in the schematic back to the main relay/fuse panel in front of the battery. Especially the contacts for the fuel pump relay. That's a known trouble spot in older Sportages. If the heaters don't work the response from the O2 sensors will be "slow" and make you think they are bad.
Hope this helps. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The more I think about your problem the more I'm convinced the O2 sensors aren't bad and it's the heater wiring. I wouldn't think both sensors would go at the same time. And the common tie in is that heater wiring. I would competely inspect and check out the heater wiring circuit right where it starts at the relay panel in front of the battery.
Check out page 25-5 and 25-1 of the electrical manual.

Thanks will check all the wiring and heater thingy first!
heh...so it's $110 for the proper connection expensive little bugger <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Wiring the universal should be a sinch, cant be much different then wiring a 3-way switch if I need to go that route... humm...didnt you say the wiring connections weren't all that great to begin with?!

Yep, the connectors are crap. I was getting a very intermittent P0140 on the rear O2 sensor. The definition of that code is no response from O2 sensor. But the code would reset and not come back for a month or so. O2 sensors don't open up and then work. So I figured it had to be the wiring. I bypassed the connector to the O2 sensor and "hardwired" it right to the ECM. Problem fixed and hasn't come back.

Could that be the reason that every once in a while I get a cel come on for maybe a few days or weeks then all of the sudden go off on it's own. Or do you think it would more than likly be the gas cap deal. I know I should have the cell checked but I just never find the time to do so.
How long does the code stay in the computer again? I now you said it before.

Just go get the silly little code reader. It's well worth it, cause you know that dang light will come back on sooner or later with all the little sonsors and electronic bits.
