Hey guys. I installed my 5:29s on Labor day. (finally). The install was done by a good friend of mine whos been doing gears on his sons rigs for years now. Well now when I drove the vehicle on monday I was/am getting a very loud whinning/howling sound. It pretty much sounds like Im being followed by a small plane. That and the rear end smells like gear oil pretty bad. I did my best to put the driveshaft back to original position (if that matters). So I just got back from Vegas and my friends been driving it around to see what the sound is actually coming from and how to fix it, and he still getting the noise. BTW there Sierra gears. What do you guys think?? Botched job?? Im using 90 weight for the gear lube, some generic brand. How can I get this thing to shutup! And I pray nothing to major, if not were gonig to redo it Sunday. Any advice?? Thank you very much for the input. Later
Maxx

Dude, sounds like a botched job.(not trying to put down your friend) When I was attempting to do this I was defeated by the lack of a press. 3 times, I left the garage with no sounds thinking all was well, each time the whining came back instantly. Upon investigation, the pinion bearing was loose, the race had settled and pinion gear moved away from the ring gear.

Anyway, I might be bearing bad news. After driving only a few miles like this, I went to a shop to have it set up by pros. They could not get the gears quiet for anything. They had worn weird and have whined ever since. You might be stuck with a whining diff as well, maybe not. Either way, I'd stop driving it and bring the thirds in for investigation.

Frank.

yeah something wasn't installed right. the pinion gear sounds like it either riding to far away from the ring gear ( like mentioned above) or it is riding in too close to it. ask him if he even checked the wear pattern. not really saying anything about your buddy, but my buddy also has been setting gears up for years and i have finally seen him do it. no gauges,no testing, no nothing. just slaps it together and goes by feel ..no thanks,i'll take a bit longer and make sure mine are right

No offense taken about my friend. ***** happens I guess. No he didnt use any gauges, just went by feel. I didnt even get it to work this morning. I turned around in fear that I might jack something up. Also though Im getting a terrible noise through my transfer case shifter. I kind of grinding whining noise. I hate this, it sucks. SO it looks as though Im going to have to have him tear it apart this weekend and gauge everything. Thank you guys for the input. But before I go, what all happens to the truck after regearing it? It seems my speedo is waaaaaaayyyyyyy off, the brakes are alot softer, and my steering is kind of loose. Thanks again later.

The vibration in your transfer case shifter could be traveling up your running gear from the gears. The speedo will change similar to changing tire diameter becuase it is directly proportional to revolutions in the transfer case. The steering and brakes could be a result of not getting the front end put back together right. I assume your vehicle is IFS. Alot of stuff can go ary in IFS alignment. You mentioned the gears were set up without instraments, was a torque wrench used on re assemblying the front end?

ok Maxx---I agree on the botched job. Good choice not to drive it any further than you had to.....

If it were me, first thing I would do is slide the axles out/remove the 3rd member and move the ring gear back and forth and check for some backlash. If there is no lash then the pinion is riding tight up against the ring gear and that will definately make a nasty noise....it will also cause that gear oil smell you noticed. I am not familiar with Sierra gears. Give us a play by play on this thread.....have a digital camera ready to snap some clear close-up pics of the painted patterns....you have some of that Chevy GM gear marking compound pn #1052351 don't ya?
I did a Google search and can't find a thing on Sierra gears....I would like to know more about them. Maybe you could describe all the markings on the side of the ring gear. Thanks ZUK

ps----see this http://dreamwater.com/zuk/projects.html

yes it changes the speedo, but i have 4:88's and running 35's and mine is almost back to stock. when the old lady is running 40mph in her runner ( stock) mine is reading right about 38mph..close enough for me..

really didnt read the post, but did ya lift the rig at all? if so, you may want to move that !@#$@ proportioning valve on the rearend..if not, sounds like you still have air in the lines ( if you disconnected them)

well I think I found out something about"sierra gears" and it's not good....they are really Genuine brand gears. Those are the worst possible gears to get for durability. see this http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/show...id=154219&highlight=sierra+gears
