I have been leasing a 98 Trooper for the past 5 years. It was my wifes car and I have not been able to touch anything but the steering wheel.

Today I called the bank and they will sell it to me for $6500 instead of the $12000 they initially wanted. It is bone stock with 56,000 miles in excellent shape and well maintained.

I know it can tow 5000 lb's. I am wondering if it would be able to tow my 85 4Runner occasionally?

If I buy it I know it won't stay stock for long but will keep it reasonable since my 4runner is set up for extreme trails.

It will be my daily driver, light trail rig, and possibly a tow rig for my 85 4Runner. Any suggestions?

DIBS!!!

If it has an automatic transmission, and you DONÆT snap it upà Give me a callà Given the interest rates these days, IÆll move so fast that there will be a whirlwind tempest of signed papers flying around the loan officerÆs desk!

Mind you, Miss Kathy wants a Trooper with a factory sunroofà and her favorite colors on them are silver, black, white, and that nice shade of burgundy/purpleà But IÆm not quite as picky!

Seriouslyà You already know the maintenance history (backwards & forwards)à so after five years of having it in the family fleet, if you have not had any reason to want to part with it by now, you probably never will. --- I'm not an authority on the Trooper's towing capabilities, but with the mileage being that low, as far as I know, it should have plenty of oomph left in it to serve some occasional trail rig tow-duties.

Still, if youÆre looking to unload it, if not me, someone around here will surely give it a good home!

Cheers!

I don't see why it wouldn't be able to tow that truck and then some. Lesse here:

Trailer for 4Runner is less than 1500 pounds, that leaves 3500.

4Runner is most probably less than 3500 pounds.

Assuming the Trooper is in good shape; brakes, tranny, etc and you have a class IV hitch, you should be good to go.

Don't try towing it up mt Everest. I would get a tranny cooler if you don't already have one (don't know here). Changing over to a compatible synth. trans fluid wouldn't hurt either.

But I wouldn't be afraid to tow it. I'd probably look into a dolly to cut weight-but honestly I hate dolly-towing.

Change your oil hot and often.

IMO, I think you'll be fine, especially given the price. Only suggestion is to keep troopers tire in th31" range. 33s chnage power/braking substantially when towing.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to keep it. Kelly Blue Book lists it at 8725 so I can't go wrong. I will keep you updated on any modifications
