I'm confused on your specs, last time someone posted torque Vs RPM curvers here, the 3.0, being an undersquare longer stroke motor, made more torque at lower revs. In fact it has more torque at idle than the 2.4 did at peak. It sure drives like it does.
This is true. Here's the V6 torque chart off my website. I sold the nicest 87 Xtra SR5 you've ever seen ONLY because the 22R-E didn't have enough power.

I have to agree with Darin in the 2nd post. I put pistons, rings, bearings, & had block checked. Now the lower end is good for at least 100,000 miles.I installed new factory head, with new valves, springs, etc. And a new low torque cam(if there is such a thing) with fresh chain, guides & oil pump. Headers, msd ignition, wires, etc., 2.25 exhaust with flowmaster. I polished & ported myself. It now has 3yrs & 45,000 miles. Read 4Crawlers write up on his engines & you will learn alot of trial & effort goes into this setup. I've been able to cross appalachians several times loaded,& had no problems. I changed to mobil 1 @ 10,000 miles & I've had no problems. It has never left me stranded & it IS easy to work on. It does'nt have the power of my chev#$*^# but it gets me where i"m going just as quick. I love my toy & it will stay original the rest of its life & mine.I have all receipts & total is $1,643. Just my opinion on the 22RE.

Sorry, I was posting specs for the 22RTE turbo motor, not the normal 22RE. All of the motor specs can be found in 4x4Wire's Toyota FAQ. I rode along with Patrick last weekend in his pickup that has a basically stock 22R (it does have a header and exhaust) and we did 80 mph down the freeway without any problems. He is running 5.29s with 35" tires and was turning about 3400 RPM. I believe it. I think in a pick up, it's different. I think in a 4runner, add tires, bumpers, etc... there's more to pull and you feel it. I did not drive any 4 cylinder pick ups but as I said, just seeing the increase in my trucks performance with weight loss I'm sure it's much better. And again, I can't stress enough, where you drive has a lot to do with it as well. SoCal is hilly and people hual butt. Frank.

Anyone else.....Bueller, Bueller? Thanks for all the good info. I will definitely let you guys know what I choose even if it is just rebuilding my 22re. Right now I have to locate another vehicle because our third vehicle is being occupied by my wife's cousin at the moment. I think I am going to use my friends car because he is in New York. I just hope that the timing chain in my truck doesn't on me. That would suck. Some days it is very loud and takes more that a few seconds to get quiet. Maybe just crappy oil filters? Who knows. Rambling now so I will shut up.

Yeah I think your location has a whole lot to do with it. I would think a lot different if I lived down there, I mean people up here on the freeway flip you off sometimes for going 75mph in the car pool lane I hate to think what it's like down there, I wouldn't care what milage I got I would need to go fast or be ran off the road. Weight does make a big difference but you get used to it. Just taking the top off makes a gear difference on some hills. But I was really impressed with how my 4runner did towing a trailor with 2 dirt bikes and also two passengers over the Sierra Nevadas and back. I had the top off at the time so I think that helped a lot. I wasn't really holding up traffic at all, I could keep 50mph in 3rd up some pretty steep hills at 8000 feet. The way I think of it is picture a v6 and 4cyl 4runner going on a loong trip. The 4cyl will lag on the hills but the v6 will have to stop for gas more often, so in the end it all evens out. With the technology of today they have made engines a lot more efficant so I would just go for a newer engine. I would just do the 2.7 swap and document it with pictures and do a write up, nothing cooler than being the first person to start a whole new engine swap. Throw some headors on there while your at it I think you will be very happy and enjoy good fuel economy with the same workonabiltiy, new word I made up . There is pretty good after market support for the 2.7 as well. I think people have made them put of something like 250 hp before right?

Man it's funny you should mention the carpool lane thing. Last night, in my old diesel benz, I had to keep it at 85 or I had people on my butt.
So out of curiosity, does the 2.7 bolt up to the 4 cylinder tranny? It seems like if you had to go to the trouble and expense of adding another tranny, then the 3.4 would make more sense.
Frank.

The 2.7 will mount up to the w56 4cyl tranny if you use the w59 bellhousing from the donor taco. The taco bell bridges the gap - that's easy. Having exhaust and intake on the opposite sides, that can prove to be interesing. A friend of mine has a 98 taco with a 2.7 and 5spd. Hopefully he will sell me the motor and tranny when he gets done with his motor swap - a 302 ford and a C4 I think. He is in the process of building the motor. That 2.7 has been working hard though, he has 44's on his truck , with IFS . Maybe one day I will get a picture of it and post it so you guys can see it. I wonder how much it would cost to rebuild the 2.7 ? If I don't get his motor, there is still that taco 2.4 in the junkyard near my house. I still haven't decided yet. Either way my truck is getting something.

A little of subject but elipster how do you like your old diesel benz? My brother is looking for a diesel vehicle, he just wants something cheap and reliable, $1500-$2000 range. Easy to work on and good economy are also pluses. I have been looking for him but since I have no prior diesel experience I don't know what vehicles are best to buy, and he doesn't want a money pit. Thanks

Thanks Your timing is impecable. I'm selling mine. I'd want a little more for it though since it is an S class. Quick run down: Make sure anything you buy has good compression. It should start right up. It should not smoke excessively. A little is normal and healthy (for the motor ) but plums of black are not good. 240D this is a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder. It is slow... I mean really slow. It gets like 27+ miles to the gallon and will take a blistering half minute to get to 60 if it's flat. On hills, you will never get there.. until it's flat. It's very utilitarian. 300D If before '81, it will be a non-turbo. A nice car, more power than the 240, but still pretty slow. If after '81, it's turbo charged and that adds like 40hp. I mean it's a night and day difference. (had one non turbo) I would highly recommend a turbo model. You can expect about 24mpg out of it. One downside, the gearing isn't as tall and sound insultation not as good as the 300SD's is so the engine starts to roar as you hit 75. 300SD. This is the full size benz. It is also available in the "L" (SDL)body where there is 6 more inches of leg room on the rear seats. I didn't get that car becuase beasically, the SD is big enough for me as it is. This is a real road car. Mine pulls the Grapevine like it isn't even there and the AC has no trouble keeping her cool in the central valley mid summer. I get 23mpg and I average 75 on the freeways. It is much quieter than either the 300 or 240D and is much more refined. Taller rear end gearing means lower RPMs at high speeds. Anyway, hope this helps. I'll cut your friend a good deal if he wants to check it out. PM me and I'll let you know what works, what doesn't, repairs I've made, etc.... All of the cars have completely mechanical motors.. no electrical accesories that are critical to operation. (no computers, fancy electronics...) I lost the alternator 3 hours north SLO and drove with a dead battery into town where I could fix it. They are all easy to fix and the engine compartments are uncluttered. People think my car is done for with 248K miles. Well it uses between leaking and burning a whopping .5 quart in 3K miles and runs very strong. Taken care of, the motors can easily see 400K and som even 500K. Frank.

I considered doing the Ford 3.8 Supercharge swap in my '84 Toyota. Those motors run very well and were in the Tbirds.
I ended up going with a '98 Vortec 4.3 & 700R4 swap.
