A measily $1200-$1300 on top of the initial (if you can find it) $1800. So first you have to acquire the 3.4 and redo the entire trucks eating and farting systems, redo its nervous system and brain...THEN shell out the the cash that pushes retirement off till the age of 70 for the SC and then add on more working years to buy the damn injector needed to make the whole SOB work!
Yeah but Darin if you want to save money then just leave it stock. These are toys, you can never justify the cost.

Thats why I stick to the 22R-E as a base for my fiddlins. Been trying and trying.....and trying to discourage my friend Bill from considering the 3.4 swap. Figured this might do the trick! Save money Harry? lol Gotta remember that I just got married pal! Day I got back from the Honeymoon I took a 2600/year paycut in order to insure my brides health and well being. That there insurance is spendy when you aint used to having dependants!
We are coming next month Harry, EB is heading down early to load up the machines for me, make sure the Limo is washed and that the sheets is being changed! lol Okay...so thats what he told me. From what I can see you have all of 4-1/2 weeks to get that thing turning over, A jug of Kesslers on the ice (small one) and your wrenches scuffed and dirty enough to look like you been doing something! How far outta downtown Reno is your new pad? ~Darin

Once again I think it depends on your power wants/needs. For what I spent on my turbo motor I could have had a 3.4L. If I had it to do over again I would probably do things differently. From what I can see you have all of 4-1/2 weeks to get that thing turning over, A jug of Kesslers on the ice (small one) and your wrenches scuffed and dirty enough to look like you been doing something! How far outta downtown Reno is your new pad?
I'll really try to get it running, this gives me a target date to shoot for. Things have been hectic at work lately though and I just moved into my house. My pad is about 15 minutes from downtown Reno, the truck is out at my parents' pad about half an hour from downtown. Dad has some cool toys out there though that I am sure a couple of gearheads like you guys will appreciate.

Swap the 2.7. There is a reason the 2.4 has been sold new in a Toy truck for years.(I'm sure you can figure out why) It will be less headaches and you'll have a newer more reliable motor. Bigger engines don't work as hard and last longer because of it. (Your truck will truly be young at heart) Just think, turn the key, off you go, no long hours of research, no 8 grand, no toasted a piston because of a tuning error or whatever, just driving and wheeling.
It should yield good fuel economy while keeping weight down too. Just think if you modded the 2.7 even mildly, I suspect you'd be past a stock 3.0(plus weighs less) and long past what you can do with the 2.4. Best of all though, you still have the reliability of stock.
Unless engine building is your hobby, you'll probably come to what myself and many of my friends did after trying to hop up 4 bangers (in trucks too big for the motors), it just isn't worth it in the long run.
Frank.

If you really want power, either the N/A 7M-GE or turbo 7M-GTE are the cheapest ways to good horsepower and fuel economy. I unfortunately can't do the swap due to smog reasons--my truck is a 1994 and the 7M series were discontinued in late-1992.

Thats why I stick to the 22R-E as a base for my fiddlins. Been trying and trying.....and trying to discourage my friend Bill from considering the 3.4 swap. Figured this might do the trick! Yeah, but don't believe everything you read on the forums . I know for a fact that a 7th injector is unnecessary, but a decent fuel pump and bigger injectors enable more forceful pony persuation. And I live in the same town with a very good and friendly 3.4 blower tuner. But you left out one compelling solution that marries Frank and Darin (do NOT form mental picture, do NOT form mental picture...): swap a stock complete 3.4 in front of the R151 I already have and call it a pony day. So there's some wiring. Mssr. Caskey will assi$t. Radiator, weld the motor mounts, swap an oil pan, 23 spline (if its not done already by then, when I'm 68), Done. I am trying to get Ted (via email) to belly up to the bar and tell me how many ponies one of his wondrous heads can squeeze out, but he is being humble, demure Ted. If I go with the head, I am out a Jasper warranty (oh well, live an learn) or I buy a core to massage and swap the engine whole. Then I discover its still a little, 'smallish'. Or I discover its enough but not a powerhouse, and I just don't drive my wife's 3.4. Oh brother.

But its almost as much work as the 3.4 swap, since in my case I have an R151 I would use... but could not behind a 2.7. You still want the bellhousing, you still want a 3-core rad, you still do wiring and ECU stuff. And you end up with a cool motor but...
