Brake caliper swap question.

Does anyone know if the brake calipers from an æ86 4Runner (w/ autolocking hubs) will fit an æ85? My right caliper has seized on the Æ85 and IÆd love to be able to steal the ones off my æ86 parts truck. The shop lists different part numbers, but if they bolt up and work, thatÆs all I need.

Nope. Need to swap the rotors too (went from solid to vented, 85 to 86) and then need a spacer due to the thicker caliper. Rebuilt 85s should be cheeeeeep.
HOWEVER, swapping the rotors and calipers is a worthy upgrade.

Hmmmmm, cool. I've already swapped the rear axle from the 86 so upgraded there. I guess I'll do the front brakes too. Do you know what kind of spacer I need? Simple washers or something more elaborate? I've worked with calipers, but I haven't looked at either trucks' to see the specs of these. Your help in figuring out what I need is really appreciated <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

FRORF has a spacer kit that uses the IFS hub, spacer behind the disk mounting surface, then the IFS rotor to the inside. A little pricey. So Sky Mfg. copied the kit and sells it cheaper here. Cleanest, strongest option IMHO. Another option, about $120, is Performance Wheel adapters, that use the stock lugs and have a new set of 12x15 lugs pressed in. Another option is AllPro, selling spacers (as opposed to adapters) that use longer, but non-metric lugs. Another option is misc. 1/4" + spacers using stock lugs. Won't match your rear axle but cheap.

Bill, what exactly needs to be spaced and why? I have aftermarket wheels with less offset so, the caliper rubbing the wheel shouldn't be an issue. Or is it something I need to space to get the caliper to mount? I'm confused.
I am on a really tight budget and can get new calipers loaded for $40 a pop, but if I can get away with a swap for less $ and more time, that's the route I want to go. I skimmed Sky Mfg.'s site and didn't see what I thought I should be looking for.

I think I found what you were refering to. The hub itself has to be spaced out, right? That sucks <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. Wouldn't that mean you'd have to tweak the hub too?

http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/suspension2.htm , scroll down till you find it. It uses the IFS hub with a solid axle locking hub. Pretty complete actually. But you could just use the thin spacers, or try your wheels with less backspacing. Shouldn't take long to mock up, then you would know. I would use the Sky kit if I had the SAS to do over. They seem better at doing this kit than at web design. But I used adapters from Performance Wheel with no issues.

Ok, so the issue is with the caliper hitting the wheel, right <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. So, if I measure the distance I have from wheel to caliper now (lets say 0.75") and then measure the thickness of both the caliper and rotor on the 86 and add any of this extra onto my 85, as long as I don't go over 0.75", I'll be ok???? Does that make sense? I just want to make sure the only problem is the caliper hitting the wheel and not anything related to the hub itself. The spacer on that page looks pretty thick. Thanks for the help...........

The issue is the thicker caliper due to the thicker rotor, and the spacer just widens the axle (WMS to WMS) to match the rear, more or less. For most users, wider is betta. You don't necessarily have to have all that thickness really. You do have to have an IFS rotor to go with the IFS caliper though. If your wheels' backspacing clears the caliper without the spacer, or an adapter a la Sky or FRORF, yer home free.

On my solid axle, I went with 80-83 Landcruiser FJ40/60 vented rotors, and re-used my V6 4 piston IFS calipers, with no spacers. This is a very common swap over on pirate4x4.
You don't need the whole spacer thing, just new rotors from a 80-83 FJ40/60.
