i did the fan conversion in my 89 extra cab and noticed a gain right away...the reason i did mime was becouse the " fan stand" bearings locked up on me and killed the engine...after looking forone at a junk yard i found out that that is a common problem withthem so i didnt want to have the same problem over again..so i took the original siezed fan stand and cut it behind the bearing housing so my belts wouldnt rub after pulling the fan off the stand and remounting the fan stand to cover up the timing belt...worked great for me...

Body Damage is Cool
This is some great tech info. Do you think it would be enough to cool the 3VZE 3.0 V6 in a standard 2nd gen 4 Runner? I really want to scrap the current fan on mine and do a electric to free up some HP on it since I am still geared stock and have 33's.
Anyone have any pictures of the install?

If you have to ask about a SAS, you're not ready for it.

I've been thinkin of doing that. It seems strange that after about 2 hours of driving the gauge will go to a bit below half and stay there. Turn fan on, turn fan off, get up to Flagstaff and temp outside drops 20deg but the gauge stays still. This will only happen after a long drive (1.5Hours or more)

I'll get a gauge.

91 taurus. Just look for a fan out of a 3.8L V6 with 3 wires. I only use the low but once I figure out a better alt, I'll stick with this.

I'm glad to hear it's working out for you Josh. Just one qestion though, why? You are a smart guy and therefore of course understand that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can only change form. If you are moving X amount of air, depending of course on the efficiency of the blade design, it will require Y amount of energy. Period. You cannont replace direct mechanical energy with electrical, which incurs greater losses through the <75% efficient conversion from mech-elect.-mech (alternator-motor-fan) than it would through the highly efficient and reliable stock clutch type fan. Maybe your clutch was shot, mine kicks off from a cold start in about 30 secs, and I don't hear it roaring again ever here in Iceland. Even there in the desert it should operate the same way, basically freewheeling at normal operating temps. I think the parasitic losses from mechanical fans are mostly fiction created to sell black magic junk. I have heard great stuff about OEM type fans like the Taurus one you have though, If I ever had a need for an electric you would see me at the pick and pull :-) Stay cool <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I've been thinking about this for a while now and I can't disagree with the logic. Good ole thermodynamics. But, I guess it boils down to the validity of the assumptions and whether the losses from a mechanical fan are really insignificant.

In the summer (100F+) I'd assume the clutch is pretty well locked up most of the time. Since the aerodynamic drag from the fan goes up with the square of the fan speed, at high RPMs that could be rather significant.

In the winter, the electric fan may be completly off at times so there are no parasitic losses.

Anyways, this is all kinda academic since we don't really have a good way of measuring the losses, but interesting none the less.

I've tried the electric fan route with an adjustable thermostatic switch. It worked weel until it decided not to kick on one out wheeling . I jumped it(Ran power direct, full time) to get me out of where i was and when I got home replaced it with the stock fan. I keep track of my gas mileage and it didn't matter which set-up was on it I got the same MPG. I also didn't notice any power gains that were irrefutably gained by the electric fan.

Here is some more theory for you.

I think the problem with the stock fan is that you are always turning the pully as well as the added drag on the engine. The electric fan is going to draw power from the alt and may increase drag that way (not sure about that one) but overall you have removed a hinderance directly from your engine and that means more available power. However, how much power may not be noticeable (could only be like 1-2hp). I'd like to see a dyno test on this.

Here's one that I'm sure isn't too thought of in this arguement, but I like the idea that you can turn the electric one off when hitting water which you can't with the stock one. I'm sure pushing water is real hard on the clutch etc. as apposed to pushing air.
