Has anyone replaced our traction bars? #320709 09/24/03 11:34 PM

These are the bars running forward from the rear axle to the body. I've seen some beefed up bars on a lot of domestic trucks, do we have anything like them for our Zus?

Well, not to sound like a smart , but...
(No pun intended... HONEST!)

I think the bigger question would be:
Has anyone ever heard of someone who's had even a bit of trouble out of their original OEM locator bars?

I honestly don't know, but I can tell you that I have NEVER seen anyone talking about it.

HTH

Six Isuzus, so far... still have three of them.

i have the calmini lift - it comes with new 'trailing arms' for the rear end. mainly you get urethane bushings and the top arms are contoured to clear the gas tank and frame so that you can acheive maximum suspension travel - probably gain 4 to 5 inches in droop. as for strength i can't imagine you need anything stronger than stock

Well I don't know about Rodeo etc., but the locator bars (I assume we are talking about the bars that reach forward from the axle to the frame) on my Trooper are very stout...I have banged them on rocks several times at Moab with no discernable effect.

Although I should relate a little story - earlier this summer I was laying under the Trooper, changing the oil. While I was waiting for the oil to completely drain, my gaze wandered down the underside to the rear...suddenly I noticed one of the locator bars was bent! My mind raced as to what to do to fix or replace this problem...until I looked at the other one and realized they were both "bent", and in fact came that way from the factory...

Body Damage is Cool
Well I'll give my .02

I do not have a choice but to make a link for the drivers
side. That is one of my issues before Uwharrie.Right now
she is driving it with the rear suspension compressed
about 1".I am using the stock shocks as limiters for the
rear suspension .If you take the rear
shocks off the arm hits the gas tank and actually holds the
spring from extending about 1/2" truck sits lopsided
with arm on tank.
Lisa is bringing another bar home tonite for me to modify It rides like crap now if you go over railroad tracks at about 2mph the back tires actually will bounce off the ground.
The trackarm/panhard bar is also getting lowered 4"
to unbind the Drv-link.....
I'll have some used rear shocks for sale shortly
they will be about 1/4" longer than stock.

When I raised the back of my Axiom with OME 912 springs I encountered the same issue, the traction bar hitting the gas tank and not letting the rear axle drop all the way down. I guess a bent or rewelded bar that would clear the tank would definitely let the rear axle have more articulation.

When I was looking for a lift kit I don't think Calmini had the available bent traction bar, when did you get your lift?

I looked at the calmini bar I don't think it has
enough of a drop in it...using bushing sleeve to
compare drop, for my application...My sigs is off a
little it's 3 1/2" in front and not sure how much in
back 912's + 2" spacers it more like 5" in back.

I think what you guys are talking about are actually suspension links and not traction bars. Traction bars are usually an add on for leaf sprung vehicles to cure problems with axle wrap.

Anyways back to the topic. Its funny Gilbert was just over at my shop on tuesday night and we were having a conversation on this very topic. He's had a lot of problems repeatedly bending his lower links and was looking to have beefier ones made. I told him I could do it for him, but I'm wondering if there are others that would be interested in them. I know I've seen a number of late model troopers bend links (I watched Bruce bend his in moab last year I think). They would be easy enough to replace with something stronger but I've yet to see anyone do it. IIRC the calmini kit for the amigos replaces the UPPER links to create clearance for the gas tank, but the stock lowers remain. So is anyone interested in seeing these get made?

Mods, I hope i'm not breaking any rules by asking this, but if there is a problem let me know and I'll delete it.
