Need a Spot
Hey everyone hope someone around here can help me. I have a 86 4runner with a 22re and it just hit 210,000 miles. Its been good to me but its starting to knock. I found a 22r that runs great only 25,000 miles on the rebuild. Is it the same exact motor except for the fuel injection? I want to pull my 22re and swap all the fuel system and everything else onto the 22r block. What do you think.
thanks for the help
Joe

The 22R from 79ish to 84 is different from the 85+ 22R and 22RE blocks and heads. As long as both of your engines are either <84 or 85+ you will be good to go. There is no difference between the two, even the cam which is widely reputed to be different, it carries two different part numbers from Toyota, but has been verified by Engnbldr's "camchekker" to be the same, right Ted? The swap you want to do will be pretty simple, just don't forget the knock sensor and O2 sensor :-) Enjoy the swap, let us know if you have any issues. It's a great opportunity to get to know the motor intimately.

Yup, 85 and up are all the same as far as longblocks go. You can pull your engine and set it alongside the acquired motor and just swap intakes, transplant your fuel pump block off plate and sensors and be back in business in no time at all. Just make sure that there is the radiator cap looking shape casting mark on the exhuast side of the motor down low near the oil pan line and your set.

To add, before you go to mount your fuel filter on the block, might do a little thread chase on the holes to get out the mud/rust. T'ain't too bad a swap. Be nice to your wire harnesses and consider getting your fuel and CS injectors rebuilt if time is not an issue for you:

>>>*Well, the early 1981 to 1984 tall block doesn't interchange with the late 1985 & up, at least not the internals.
The externals kinda/sorta bolt in...

On the cams, I keep hearing of the "EFI" camshaft, let's just say I am willing to learn, someone please show me...When I ordered them from Toyota, I got two cams in two boxes with two different part numbers, (and price) and they were identical in every respect....So I just reground them to my 270/430 RV profile and sold them...*There is at least two guys running around with a $380 Camshaft in their engine...*LOL**

*Heck, what do I know, I am just an old coot that is retired and learning....*anybody wanna race...(Warning..I am old and use deceit as a tool.....)...*EB

That's what I thought I had read from ya Ted, good to have confirmation. I have a stock cam I'll give you for free, can you regrind that thing? I think I am about to the point of needing one of those Josh type prototype special "rip your b@lls of at 3K" type of cams. I will emal you soon with what goodies I have been dreaming/thinking about.........L8TR.

P.S. I'd be happy to race, 0-60 or 1/4 mile on my VFR750, pity the poor thing is in storage, otherwise I think the 3.2sec 0-60 and 10.5 .25 mile would be pretty competitive with that sweeeet Z06. Funny thing is in 15 years of riding fast bikes it is always the 18 y/o idiot in the mustang that wants to get smoked, the smarter/older (sorry) guys always know enough to wink, nod and just roll on for fun :-) I love your car, some day I too will be Z06 worthy..........

Last time I heard about you racing you got yours handed to you by a kid in a CRX, so be careful about getting a big head now. That vette isn't the fastest thing out there and I'd hate to see you get your ego bruised yet again. LOL

You'll need to use your distributor. The 22R uses a vaccum advance while your R-E is controlled by the ECU. Easiest part of the whole swap over in my opinion. One bolt and out she slides...slip your pride and joy back in the whole in the right orientation (get your minds outta the gutter ) and tighten down the retaining bolt... and its done.
