Getting the Wheeling Fever

Okay Guys I'm pulling the head on my 86 22re and all the head bolts are now finger loose except #8. It's binding and I'm afraid that I'll be pulling threads and stripping the hole. This is the first head I've pulled. Is this a common problem? Is there any tricks? Do I just plow on ahead and fix the hole afterwards? In wait mode! rj

#8, is that the 4th bolt back on the exhuast side by chance? Sorry RJ...aint nothing you can do but charge forward...its gotta come out regardless. I went through this on the 88's original mill. Ended up being a boogered thread from the factory. Had to drill out the hole, and use a doubled heli-coil to remedy it. Hopefully you will get luckier. Best bet is get the 1/2" breaker out and continue on my good man. Sorry...happens to the best of us though. By the way...theres a reason its that bolt...same location as 80% of head gasket failures...same reason. HEAT! ~Darin <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />

No kidding on that career jump, but then who in the hell would provide us parts without the need to get a line of credit against our houses?
Tough situation on your headbolt, but as I said...its gotta come out. And every turn hurts! Ive never been in prison or jail but from what I can gather the feeling of every outward turn is similar to having Horny Bubba as a cell mate. Bad to worse! The head bolt broke off. Guess I'll just have to take the block and head to the machine shop. BUMMER! rj

be very gentle with her. Knock it on the head with a drift punch a few times, try to wiggle back and forth, heat it up at the head, try to wiggle back and forth, lube the ***** out of it, try to wiggle back and forth. Repeat with patience until removed.If you only pull it out 2 deg. at a time it's a whole lot better than Helly Coil'n it. (which you may have to do anyway) Ya, and chase the bolt hole threads with a bottoming tap. You CAN get it out, it all depends on how much time you want to invest right now as apposed to later.

2 choices now, machine shop and have them handle the whole removal and redo which by far is the easiest considering it took over a week to get the heli-coil and to find the right tap when me and a buddy it. Or get out the vise-grips and or shape whats left of the bolt if anything is sticking up and work it out. Two turns in followed by 2-1/2 turns out and repeat for a few hours till shes completely out.
I vote for #1. Shouldnt be too expensive...biggest PIA will be pulling the motor. But look at it this way...experience is the #1 to gain knowledge and a few more of these and we can play mechanic swinging with the same handicap! Hope you is familiar with golf terms hehehe. As I said before....schidty situation but its a great way of learning a lesson or two. Unavoidable too I might add...wasnt your fault. Dang that Doc Yoda anyhows!!! bummer, rj... that stinks... well, get it fixed right and then you'll be gold. you probably wanted make sure the deck was flat, anyway, right?
ps, the auto is still running and just made two mt. adams runs camping. still noisy, perhaps more than before. but it is a tough tranny, i've got to give it that...
