 what causes this electrical problem?

Steve's truck (the purple one from CO4RJ) is having a wierd electrical problem.
His dash lights are dark, his blinkers dont' come on when he arms/disarms with the remote, and other missing lights problems.
He has pulled and checked all the fuses. He's reseated all the relays, but I don't know how to test a relay...
One thing to note is that he has the PP "oem" fog lights. These have long since corroded and don't work any more. Their fuse is disconnected.
I remember someone here had this problem with the dash lights, but I can't find the post.

So did he have any blown fuses? Did he put in his remote entry or did Toyota. Has he put in a new CD player recently? These can have effects like you are describing. I used to work at a car audio shop and we saw cases like these where people just wired things up wrong when doing their do-it-yourself projects. Give me some more to go on and maybe I can help.

His truck is 100% stock except for tires  and those friggin fog lights. I'm wondering if they shorted something out. He's in Denver about 1 hour away. I may go down this weekend and take a look. He didn't find any blown fuses, but I don't know how to tell him to check relays. He said he made sure they're seated tight.

to test a standard 12v bosch type relay, you need a voltmeter. ( i used a digital one so...).
you need to test whether the coil is okay.
connect the 2 posts of the coil and see if there's continuity.
if there is, then check whether the armature moves or not. applying voltage to the coil and see if the armature goes NO or NC...
finally, check all the grounds on the vehicle. that might mean checking the factory shop manual where the grounds are...

Go through an make sure all the grounds are securely tightened and have clean connections. We saw people who grounded things that weren't supposed to be grounded thus blowing fuses and shutting down parts of the electrical system in their car. Hope all goes well

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll pass them on to Steve and see if we can figure it out. Hey alan I'll let you know if I'm gonna make it down but maybe I'll have steve get a hold of you anyway since you're practically neighbors
