Okee dokee...will do some thinking on the front end....
heh..it probably needs lil quadrunner springs <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
maybe have front spings made....<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />
Dave your alter ego RockSportGear has springs that will lift it 4"?....
How much would your alter ego charge for the 2 front spings?

what are the specs on the front springs as far as fitting into the seats properly and such??....heh...I dont gotta jack it up and measure. I think I'm gonna go down to our local 4 wheel custom shop see what they can come up with..heh

one more silly question(for now)
why cant the seats be changed to accomodate different springs?....humm...just a thought

ok, for anything 2.5" or less, the coils are 138 plus shipping per pair. but, for anything more than that, you also need a new upper strut mount to allow more down travel on the street so that you don't pick a tire up while turning or something and hitting a bump/dip at the same time. the mounts are about $75 for a set. they don't come with the bolts either, but they should be cheap.

as far as changing the coil seats? well, you can make them smaller if that'll help, but you can't go more than about a 1/4" wider because they have to fit inside the strut tower at certain points during strut travel. the coils measure about 4.5" outer diameter, about 3.5" inner diameter and are about a 1/2" thick, maybe slightly thicker, but they are measured in mm, not inches, so don't take these measurements to heart.

it's almost as cheap to go with these custom coils as it would be to go with junkyard or new stock coils for anything else.

one thing with those TJ coils Dennis mentioned: he also said they were very stiff, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your preferences, driving habits, load carrying habits and condition of your shocks and people who ride with you as well as what you expect out of your vehicle as far as ride quality goes. not recommending against them, just recommending some research on your part into spring rates and such.

What are the free dimensions, number of coils and wire size of the front and rear springs? I have access to a number of stock springs in the 4" to 4 5/8" diameter range that are mostly less than $20 each. I could work backwards from the stock spring dimensions to see if one would be good for both a lift and a reasonable ride stiffness.

Thanks,

Ron

well, the rates are someting close to 360-something lbs per inch for the fronts and 160-something lbs per inch for the rears. the fronts are about 4.5 outer diameter, but the wire is more like 15mm thick, so that puts the inner diameter about 3.25 or something. anyway, the free height of the stock coils is like 11 inches or so, maybe slightly more while the 4" lifted coils were about 13-13.5" free height. the rears are 11-12mm thick but not sure on the free heights.

I just happen to have a set of OE fronts and rears sitting beside me (funny about that!)

Fronts: 338 mm long, 14.4 mm thick, overall 119 mm metal diameter, 8 turns with 15 mm overlap.

Rears: 265 mm long, variable metal dia from 8.3 mm to 14.4 mm, overall diameter max 164 mm (belly) minimum diameter internal (ends, to fit around bumpstops) 48 mm, 8 turns no overlap.

Can you handle it all in metric???

Hi Gary,

Metric is no problem. Unfortunatly, the springs that I can get are only about 300mm free length and have 12 turns. The ones with a high enough spring rate for lift would not give enough articulation since the coils would touch too soon. Could you post pictures so I could see how the ends are configured? It would help next time I go to the junk yard.

Thanks,

in inches stock front springs would be....

Fronts: 13.307 inches long, .566 inches thick, overall 4.685 inches metal diameter, 8 turns with .59 overlap.
<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

so if stock is nearly 13.5 inches....how tall will the new ones need to be for the 4 inch lift?...about 15-16 inches?

Depends mainly on two things, wire diameter (torsional strength), and wire length (ie number of coils). There are other factors involved but these are at the more technical end of the design such as the elastic and plastic points of the steel which govern how much the spring can be compressed before it wil not expand back to its original length, etc., etc..

My V1.0 springs from Ironman gave me almost a 2" lift but were the same physical length the the O.E. springs were, they just used heavier wire. My V1.1 rears have gone down a bit in wire diameter and increased the number of coils giving me good <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> articulation in the rear. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />

they are about 2" taller and use a thicker wire. but i think the newest sets will be a little more than 2" taller or use an even thicker wire, not sure i gotta talk to the coil manufacturer today, they said they've fixed the sagging issue, but they didn't tell me how yet.
