Thanks for all the info. The ignition key switch is getting harder to turn (on and off). I'll jump the solenoid next, before switching out the ignition switch! Staceman I figure mine is wearing out a bit, too. That's why I'll be adding the starter relay and also rigging up a push button starter switch inside, should come in handy on the trail.

Do you have any specs about adding the push button start on your site 4Crawler. I am ready to take my switch out too.

Starter relay or corroded cables, most likely.
No substitute for diagnosis though....

My '85 has no starter relay from the factory, so its just a plain wire from the ignition switch to the starter. Relay kit is pre-wired for a push button, will probably add a second one for inside the cab.

Getting the Wheeling Fever

My 85 pickup, 22R, used to do the single "click" once in a while. I replaced the contacts, so far, so good. about a year later, starter would give the same problem as the single "click" problem, but no "click". Teeth looking nasty on starter anyways, (teenager scratching all the time), so I took it out, and replaced it with a re-built from Pep-Boys. (free, I used the paperwork from the PO on my 85 4Runner). Same problem. Starts up great in the morning, but seems to fail after warm-up and driving a while, then parking it for a few minutes, "click" problem without the click. So, It's not the starter itself, I had it tested again, It's not the contacts. I am thinking of replacing the solinoid wire from end to end. Any other thoughts from you guys? Thanks for putting up with the long post! My guess is that it's the wires inside the steering column that the ignition key turn. Your ignition key just turns a slotted piece of metal. the actual switch and wires are a separate unit that screw to the switch. I had the same problem in my truck and when I replaced the electrical switch it fixed the problem <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Hondas are well known for having problems with the ignition switch contacts. I rather doubt Toyota's are so different as to never have this problem. On the Honda's, it's a combination of the grease hardening preventing the spring loaded contacts for moving, and burning on the face. Disassembly, cleaning and lubricating takes care of the problem normally.
