ok, I hit the brakes and I get a loose clunk when I first hit them. Sounds like from the rear.

Almost like the spare tire is loose, but its not. did pretty thorough check underneath and everything looks good. Went by the place that did the rebuild and they thought it was the rear brakes, said they 'clunk' when the shoes are about to go.

I've done the reverse to e-brake adjustment a few times today but it persists. Do I need the tear it apart and check it out?? I've been meaning to replce the shoes, but with the engine thing, it got pushed down the list.

Any ideas???

A clunking sound from rear brakes? Not something I have come a cross to my knowlege, though one mans clunk is another mans click. I couldn't imagine a clunking noise being caused by worn shoes. Now if you said a grinding noise, then I would look no further. At any rate, it's definatly worth checking out. Sometimes if a drum is turned improperly on a brake laeth, it can have grooves in it that the shoes will fallow like a needle on a record player and the shoe will reach a point on the drum and snap back. This is more of a snapping noise though and not that of a clunking.

Still no idea. Did another thorough look today and it sounds like something is loose in the rear end. Only happens when I first get on the brakes OR go over speedbump, or bump. Reseated spare tire underneath and pulled/tugged everything I could get to underneath the rear end. Its driving me crazy.

My concern is that something happened whilst my beauty was being towed. I just had the engine replaced so I know for a fact that it was towed at least twice. Maybe that will help someone who knows more about that stuff. I just dont know what else to look for.

sway bar bracket may be loose/////

Might want to think about jacking the rearend and putting the axle on stands. Have a friend put it in gear and work the brakes while you take a look/listen. Visual inspection is next.

Still no dice.

Had a couple buddies listen and I've narrowed it to the driver's side rear, but everything looks ok. searched under 'clunk' on board and came up with the axle wrap threads. Called my driveshaft place and they were convinced that what I was explaining was "not a driveline problem"

anyway,

Had driveline lubed 1 month ago, and the only other thing new are shocks, done at same time. Also those appear to be tight and mounted correctly.

Maybe going to the my local mech on Wednesday as he has diagnosed some hard problems before. Really bugging me.

I have a similar thing, except it's on acceleration and braking. One of my bushings is shot on my lower driver's side control arm on the rear axle. Take a prybar to your control arms and see if any of the bushings have extra movement.
