Thanks for all the info everyone! I think I now have enough to make a good decision. It's going to be a little while before I fix the spring/suspension situation as there are more pressing needs on this truck, like brakes and a cylinder head with decent valve guides, but when I do get the suspension under it I'll report back and let you know what I did and how it worked.

Will consider getting a fully rebuilt cylinder head from Engnbldr. For the price (and the peace of mind) he is hard to beat.

And for brakes, if you are just turning the rotors and getting new pads that is fine, but if you have to buy new rotors consider getting vented FJ-40 rotors and using brake calipers from an 86+ IFS truck for better fade resistance and more stopping power.

Stick around here, there are all sorts of deals to be found.

Hey, thanks again Harry! I'll definitely be sticking around as long as I own this truck, this forum has turned out to be a great source of info.

Quick question on the brake upgrades - are the rotors and calipers you suggest direct bolt-ons? If the answer is no I'll search through the archives here to see if I can find all the pertinent info so you don't have to retype it.

Hey Harry,

I've got an 80 with the bolt on rotors (not pressed like 81+) will the same conversion work? the bolt patern is the same just the later ones have 2 extra holes.
Thanks a bunch.

Funny you should mention that. I was not familiar with the difference in rotors until I saw it mentioned on All-Pro's website this morning. According to their site the conversion is still possible but you will have to use different rotors.
