What would be the best vehicle to get the axle from to do a Sas?
Is it better to go coil sprung or leafs?
I'm thinking about gathering parts and was just curious which way to go?What else should I look for?

If you hit up the search option in the top you'll see many of the trials and tribulations of the dozen or so guys who have done this. And you won't have to wait for an answer.

I'm not one of them, but I have noticed late 70's Wagoneer axles are frequently used, the specifics, you will find easily in past threads.

1974 to 1976 Jeep Wagoneer.

This is the Dana 44 that has passenger side differential and these years I believe both knuckles were flat top. The passenger side being flat top will be of vital interest to you for steering.

very broad question to answer, there are many choices, and what you want to accomplish will determine this. Remember, there is no guide to SAS and every one is different. Give us some details, and go from there. If you don't know yet, you got a lot of reading ahead of you before you need to worry about parts.

Again, depends on what you are trying to accomplish. But i would say if you are asking this question, stick to leafs. A leaf setup will be far more forgiving as far as design goes and take a lot of headache out which many first time SAS'ers don't want to deal with.

ok first off i've never done one...duh....but............
i'd love to see someone do a coil sprung sas but like rob said, if u think about it, the leafs are much more forgivin in allowin you to not have to worry so much about extra links, if u get those links wrong on a coil....it's gonna suck! coils could pop out, it's gonna be wicked bad! but hey man, if you're good in math and wanna do some h/w go for the gold!!! get something that will flex like your rear set-up!

I do know there is alot to learn but the reason I asked now without the knowlege is because I was at the junk yard and they had a waggy sitting there!I remember people say waggy axles and the thought crossed my mind,.........is there room in the garage?
What could it hurt.....if I chose not to use it someone here could!!

I've been playing with the idea of doing a sas on my trooper for awhile and the best axle of choice i have found for the second gen. troopers is an FJ80 toyota landcrusier axle. (92-97ish) they are basicly a bigger version of the mini truck axle. they are 63.5wide, high pinion with tie rod on the back side of the axle, bigger birfields, strong as hell, already comes with bigger brakes, third member style, avalible with an elocker, ect. they are a little pricey, but i believe well worth it. check out Housters web page on is swap , sorry i can't find the link, just do a search for FJ80.

Dana 44s and 79-85 Toy mini-truck axles seem like the most popular swap axles. The Land Cruiser FJ80 axle is stronger than both, and a Dana 60 is even stronger, still. That covers 95% of the swaps out there, but there are other more exotic swap possibilities like Unimog or Volve portal axles...

The only limit to the possibilities is your imagination, skills, and funding. With enough time, cash, and skills, truely ANYTHING is possible.
