Need a Spot
I had my 88 Raider 2.6L 4 cyl checked out for a hesitation on initial acceleration. The mechanic says that the accelerator pump is bad and I need a new carb. What are my options - rebuild (mechanic says I may not be happy with the results), buy a reconditioned unit (who sells?), or replace with a different type of carb (what kind, from where?). Any suggestions or your experiences would be very welcome. Thanks.

Body Damage is Cool
The Raider carb is NOT HARD TO REBUILD! It can easily be done by anyone with a few tools and an attention to detail in an afternoon. However, the Accel pump diaphram is not included in most kits, so you'll have to make sure you get it somewhere (I think a place called carb tech in CA sells the parts you need).

TIP: if you decide to do this, hitl the screws with PB blaster the day before you try and take it apart -- makes it much easier!

Also, there is a Weber replacement that is available for about $300 on E-bay (new). Works good, but a little difficult to get adjusted right after install (I'm told) -- and the off-road performance is not that great.

Replacement rebuilt carbs are available at most any auto parts store, but are very pricy.

The carb off a 2.6 Dodge Caravan will also fit with some tinkering, but not if you're in a smog state.

That's about all I know -- others may chime in.

Good luck!

Terry

The only reason he says you might not be happy with the results is (probably) he has no clue how to replace the parts or properly set it up once it is reassembled.

In addition, the vacuum-controlled emissions devices on this engine can be a little intimidating if you don't know how it works.

If you do a search on the Mitsubishi board using the word "mikuni", you will find many documents explaining the carb's operation, how to overhaul, and how to adjust. If you use the word "vacuum" you will get documents on the emissions system and vacuum hose routing. Use the phrase "oxygen sensor", and you will get some useful diagnostic information.

Save your money...don't buy the Weber (you will just go back to your Mikuni)...either overhaul it yourself, find a specialty shop via the internet to overhaul it (ship via UPS), or replace it with a reman unit (chancey because alot of "mass rebuilders" don't know what they are doing, either).

Hope this helps.

Definantly cool, but maybe a smaller carb would help you out. I Seriously doubt a NA 2.6 is flowing 500CFM. How do you have it jetted? Thats cool!

If you are going for power, get yourself a turbo setup!!! MUCH more streetable than the NA 2.6, and I bet you could sell all your NA stuff, and fund the turbo swap.
