I'm thinking about taking on a rebuild of a T-18. I have never done this before, and was wondering how difficult it is going to be.. I was also wondering if anyone has any good info sites, as well as a parts place that carries stuff for the T-18 since Quadratec dosn't.

i say go for it! i rebuilt my T90 no problems...

i would check out novac adaptors...they might have a "freshen up" kit that will do the trick. plus, i am sure that with a little searching you will find any other parts you need for a fair price

I rebuilt mine a few years ago, wasn't too tough but you do need a good bearing puller and a press. I got my rebuild kit from www.drivetrain.com - costs about $130 and comes with all new bearings. If you need to replace the syncros, those cost extra. You need to take your T18 apart to measure a couple parts before you can get the rebuild kit, there are several thicknesses of front bearings, and different sized syncros depending on the T18 you have.

It's not a bad job. I think you could get by without a press. The bearings were not very tight on mine. Yours may be different though.

The Eaton style snap rings used in a T-18 can be tough to deal with. It's a lot easier if you buy a snap ring pliers like part number 5768A14 from http://www.mcmaster.com/ . This is a compound leverage type snap ring pliers meant for Eaton style snap rings.

Most places like Napa only sell the standard Eaton snap ring pliers that look like part number 5773A14 from Mc Master. I found that these didn't quite open far enough to remove the rings without resorting to using a screw driver to help, and they were much more difficult to hold open.

Couple of tear down tips...remove the cluster gear shaft before trying to remove upper gears...this will drop the cluster down so that you can get the input out and remove the 4th and third sycro hub...then you can pull the rest out the top and disassemble. When reinstalling you will need to pack the cluster gear rollers with packing grease and leave laying on the bottom with thrust washers in place...and just set front and rear bearings on input and output in place partially in case...then with pto cover off you can pick up cluster and slide shaft in without disturbing rollers. just wanted to add my $.02 to the grease comment: dont use regular axle/bearing grease. it is too thick to melt away and allow your gear oil to lube them little rollers up...it just turns into this nasty gooey mess. use a good assembly lube instead...you will thank yourself later if you pay more and get a good brand and not the cheap stuff too. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
