MAN...this totally blows me away dude...has this truck been abused or neglected or what? I have never heard such a tale about a toyota. I truely feel for ya. I have a '98 V6 prerunner with over 143K on the clock. Aside from the modifications I've made to it, the ONLY maintenance its had is a front brake change at 116K and 2 spark plug changes. THATS IT. Oil changes every 3K of course and tranny and rearend services at each 10K.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here...but I'm guessin you've treated this poor soul like a red-headed step child. Oil seals usually go bad and begin leaking as a result of being run in dirty oil. (this also would explain the KNOCK) As for your rack and tie rods...I can just see ya blarin down a washboarded dirt road at 75...and the windshield leak would follow suit after a couple hundred miles of that. And I bet the tranny pan was full of your foot prints when the mechanic tore into that. LOL. Are you one of those guys that could tear up an anvil? LOL.

Damn flammedtaco, sounds like you got the proverbial bad apple. I hope it doesn't spoil the rest of them . All jokes aside, my 96 2.4L 2wd with 106K and a 3200 mile trip pulling a 5x10 u-haul trailer cross country under his belt has seen the inside of a auto shop all of three times:1 preventitive maint( adj timing etc) 2 new tires and rims and 3 this Fri for the first "repair" a valve adjustment. Other than that just oil changes plugs cap rotor wires and new battery are all it has needed.
Don't mean to rub it in, but you may have run your taco too hard or just got the bad one. I hope things turn around for ya.

Sounds like you got a lemon or you're really giving it the rough treatment. Do you treat it the same as the rest of your trucks? If you look at the averages then these things are pretty darn reliable and tough so it must be something specific to your situation.

Only the rear axle seals are "common" to be replaced. That's amazing that you've managed to have all that damaged or destroyed. I've driven my 2000 Toyota dang hard (about 85K miles now) and haven't had anywhere close to that number of problems. How did most of those even get destroyed on yours? I'm still on the original rack and pinion steering even with 33" tires, dual lockers, and lots of hard off-roading.

how much mud did the taco see? -seal and radiator issues
what size of tires and wheels are you running? -tie rod and power steering issues

my 99 taco had over 90k miles on it when i got rid of it back in 2002. i ran it hard for most of those miles on 35" with amsoil oil/fluids change religiously. yet i still had problems with alot of my seals (engine, trans, t/c, & axles) and tie rods. trucks in general don't like mud especially when you don't wash it off until weeks later. and the rack & pinion is crap especially when you run oversize tires & wheels.

of course, i have no idea if your taco is stock or not.

to answer all of you, yes i drive hard, its seen its share of florida mud.but ive driven the same with every truck owned. its stock with the exception of 31x10.50 mud terrains on 15x10 wheels. the worst stuck i have managed to get in was backing up to pull a friend out when i found a hole and water was over the bed rails, maybe 3" of water in cab.yes i know that wasnt good but sh!~ happens.i just dont understand how all my other trucks could handle my driving and the TOYOTA can't.maybe its the newer models, i have several friends with late 80's to mid 90's 4x4 yotas that would just amaze you the crap they can be put through.

Well. I would say you have to drive a prerunner a hell of alot harder to do what a 4x4 will do. Sounds to me like your rat baggin that poor 2wd truck.
