Wow that is scary but I guess it makes sense, because the aluminum is softer than the cylinder walls it won't scratch them up.

i ran into this same problem on my old '84 yota, the idiot that owned it before me crossthread a plug big time. i did the tap + insert thing too. i got the shavings out by starting the engine on 3 cylinders for a few seconds to blow them out of the hole

The vaccum will draw out most of the shavings, even though they are pretty much harmless, they just blow out the exhaust when you start it..
The real problem is with the late EFI engines...They run very close to stoichiometric, which means high heat compared to a carb rig..
The steel threads act like an insulator and change the thermal transfer from the plug to the head, this is all that cools it..This is due to the thread pitch, spark plugs and helicoils are only around 75 to 80% thread contact, this leaves little air pockets around the threads..Lots of folks don't realize this, and just how close these engines are to hot spots even when tuned normally..
When we install a helicoil set or theadsert inhouse, we always suggest a one heat range drop in the spark plug for that cylinder to avoid detonation...*EB

Considering the size of the chips being made when correcting the hole, and the size of the openings in the standard Toyota Cat.Converter (cant spell the big cat word hehehe), upon startup and exhaling of the chips through the exhaust wouldnt they accumulate just inside the front of the Cat and cause restrictions? Another thought is if this was the case, and considering the operating temperature of the CatConverter would they be transformed into an aluminum puddle? Hmmm..maybe Im thinking too much for a Friday. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" /> Isaac's on his way down to the office here so we can play EFI guys! Grease the tap, suck it out with a shop vac, what is left will burn up the first time the engine fires!!! You are not building a Saturn Rocket here folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for all the advice. this is a great forum. right now, i'm just waiting for the rtv silicone that i applied on the insert to dry before i put in a spark plug and start her up. the dry time says 24 hours on the package so i'll let you all know what happens then. if something goes kabloom...i'll be reading up on the 3.4 5vz-fe swap. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> What? rtv? who recommended that?

I don't think rtv can handle those temps!
