I just rebuilt the engine in my Rodeo, and after installing the engine and driving it a bit I have noticed a high pitch chirp when the clutch is engaged (dead stop in neutral and as well when moving). BTW: The truck is a 92 Rodeo w/ a 3.1L and the BW tranny. The noise is coming from the bell housing, and I suspect that it's one of two things: the thrust bearing, or the throwout bearing. I replaced the thrust bearing when I reassembled the engine, and the throwout bearing is only 2 months old. It didn't squeak when I replaced the clutch (2 months ago) and only started after the rebuild.
Does anyone have an idea? Since my father in law installed the throwout bearing I'm wondering if he didn't put the fingers for the bearing in the right place. I haven't climbed underneath yet to check the alignment of the fork and the bearing, but that's coming next. Would the thrust bearing also make this noise? It was a tight fit into the thrust bearing when I installed the tranny, and I'm wondering if there isn't a little bit of interference between the input shaft and the bearing. Any thoughts?

kind of a common sense question but ill try anyways. Did you put oil on everything before you installed it? so it is lubed in the beginning when first turning it over

Yep, lubed the whole puppy down. During the holiday weekend I plan on climbing under my rig for a closer look. I was just hoping to have an idea of what to focus on before I started pulling things apart. Of course, there isn't much to taking off the inspection plate and the dust shield. The real issue will be if I discover that the throwout or thrust bearing is bad.

I think you have it. If it makes noise with the cluth pedal released, it may not be the throwout bearing. It would be the pilot bearing. Did you install it correctly? Is there a chance it got damaged? Does the noise change as you press on the clutch pedal? Does it follow engine speed?
The throwout bearing may be a problem, especially if it did not get seated properly. Did you get it reattached to the pressure plate fingers? The 3.2 clutch is a pull-type setup and is slightly different than the normal push-type arrangement.
I doubt you will see anything through the inspection cover. You will probably have to pull the tranny.
Good Luck, Michael
