Just bought an 85 4runner 22RE Auto with 200K for a song. Outstanding condition except the timing chain is broken. I am in the process of putting in a new one and discovered when draining the oilpan that a LOT of coolant came out before the oil did. I am thinking it could be one of three things:

1 When timing chain broke, it put a hole in the water jacket and leaked into the motor.

2 Head gasket is blown.

3 The motor needs a ring job.

Hopefully the answer is #2!

When I bought it the previous owner said that it did not leak or burn any oil before the timing chain broke and that it passed smog with no problems at all. The truck is in overall great condition, so I am thinking it wasn't abused too badly during its life.

What are some of the other possibilities with this? It has a new radiator and water pump. I am pulling the head tomorrow to take a look at the cylinders.

Any advice or expertise would be most appreciated!
