I just completed the timing chain replacement on this motor and went to start it yesterday. The motor turns over immediately and runs excellent for about 5 seconds and then stalls out. I can restart it again but after another 5 seconds it stalls. I just replaced the timing chain cover, head gasket and resealed the oilpan. I think it might either be a lack of compression or vacuum issue or maybe a fuel problem? I am not quite sure.

What things should I inspect to help solve this issue?

Thanks!

Cap and rotor time? Other ignition issues? Just stating the semi obvious. Clogged fuel filter?

Genshie,
Not sure if this will help but, the other day my truck backfired on startup, and would only do the same thing yours is doing(start up,die after a few seconds, start up again), I looked around and found out that it had blown the hose from the intake to the breather box (not sure of the right name) off of the intake side. I put it back on and tightened the clamp and it fired right up and never gave me another problem...hope this helps, Dave

Also check the three wires that run from the ignitor across the valve cover for breaks. They have a tendancy to get brittle and crack. I had the same symptoms and got grey hair trying to figure out what went wrong. Found that one wire was broken

Well I did a search on this issue and reading an old post reminded me of something. I forgot to plug in the connector to the AFM when I reinstalled it. That would explain the motor shutting down. I knew it was something simple! Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
