The crank gear (sprocket) is larger diameter than the whole in the timing cover. And the chain itself would get in the way trying to clear the gear...the oil shelf just below the gear wouldnt allow enough clearance to pull the gear free Im thinking. Ive got a block on the stand and more timing sets and covers than I know what to do with...can play with it if ya want and let ya know if I can do it successfully! lol
