I have recently aquired an '86 extra cab truck that has the automatic trans and tranfer case. The truck HAS issues, the 375,000 and some change registering on the BROKEN odometer might have something to do with it. LOL. The transmission and transfer were both overhauled by aamco a few years back. The transmission does work, but will not downshift and the transfer case doesn't seem to work AT ALL. All the linkage is hooked up and moves, but it will not engage the front axle and low range does not work either. This transfer case is the type that appears to work like an automatic transmission, it has its own separate fluid pan. Does this transfer case SHARE the fluid with the tranny or is there a separate filler location for it? I'm guessing its not working because its either low on fluid or the clutches in it are burned up. I was just hoping someone on here might have some experience with these and would be able to give me some insight before I tear it apart. I'm sure my shifing problem with the tranny is a result of a dirty gommed up valvebody...it has been sitting for quite some time. And YES, I LIKE AUTOMATIC TOYOTAS. I can see it comin already..."just change it to a 5 speed dude" LOL, NOT, the automatic is the main reason I bought it. I've been shifting through gears in toyotas for nearly a half a million miles.

WELP, once again it looks like I'm on my own to figure this one out. I reckon I'll put on my blind fold and tear into it. I'll post my findings. I already suspect its an electrical problem. Why are people SO AFRAID of automatic transmissions? They don't bite, I promise.

With a little squirrel motor though I want to rev the wee out of it and choose my own gear. Just my $ .02...

I personally prefer a 5speed over an auto, but I do have to say it's not bad at all having a toyota 4x4 with a 22re and auto trans. I have one, that I will be selling soon, and I love it, accelerates fine, passing gear will get the revs up nice and high. It's almost the same as my 4runner with a 5speed. It does have exhaust, headers, and a cone filter with fresh rebuild, but still even before the rebuild it wasn't bad at all. Whoever started the rumor the toyota's with auto's are slugs either were driving a poorly tuned truck, or was smokin.

I have an Auto and love it. I just wish I could get lower gears for it.

Yes, if it is an A340H the tranny/Transfer share the fill tube.

I agree guys...toyota automatics are VERY well engineered transmissions. When they're right, they're right. I just hauled a 5,000lb trailer 1,200 miles behind my Automatic Tacoma through the mountains of west virginia and virginia (round trip) and had no problems at all. Didn't run in overdrive of course, but I still averaged 64mph and got 12.5 mpg. Not too bad. ANYWAY, see my newest post "NOW what to do?"
