NOW what to do? #360146 12/09/03 01:52 AM

I recently purchased a 1986 Toyota 4x4 exrtra cab with EFI and Automatic Transmission from a guy on ebay. Pretty much got had, but that's ok. Sh*t happens I reckon. The truck had a blown head gasket and upon removal I discovered the dreaded corroded water passage. But that's not the worst part. The WIRING HARNESS looks like it'd been run over with a lawnmower. The frame and cab on this truck is in pretty good condition considering. No rust at all hardly. The majority of the rust limited itself to the BED. The question I'm faced with now is what do I do with it? I bought it hoping for a reasonably cheap fix so I could have a beater to take in the woods. Now it looks like its going to cost too much to fix...unless I can find an engine harness for a 22REC with automatic trans that's in good shape for almost nothing. LOL, any ideas? I was kinda hopin that one of you guys might have one sittin in the weeds....since it seems like I'm the only person on this forum that likes automatics.

Depends on how much you paid for it. You could part it out or fix the motor, do a 5sp and find a harness (Assuming a Auto harness is different from a 5sp harness).

LOL, it's not quite THAT bad. The only harness that's affected is the engine harness....since the truck has nearly 400,000 miles on it, I'm sure the engine has been IN and OUT of it several times...in god knows what kinda dirt-floor shade-tree garages. Every single connector on the engine harness is busted. After tearing it down to remedy the blown head gasket, I was amazed it even ran. Many of the connectors had already been replaced via SPLICING WITH WIRE NUTS! I never seen such a mess.

Well, if you really put your heart into it you could have a helluva vehicle. It's not impossible to build your own wire harness - trust me if a boob like me can build a weapons system harness for an F-16 in the field (well, as afield as the AF gets anyhow) then I know you can build an efi harness for your rig. Sit down with the wiring diagram, pull everything from the truck (engine, tranny, exhaust) and go from there.

If I were going to rebuild the whole thing I'd start by finding all the connectors - determining what you need to 'plug right in'. If necessary diag out all the connectors you need and mate up connections for them to your new harness. Don't just crimp them together, solder the things then heat-shrink over it. Try to find another 86 4x4 so you can note where wiring has spiral-wrap, heat shielding and the like.

If you really put your mind to it you should be able to nearly duplicate the quality of the old harness.

Rebuilt tranny, new/rebuilt motor, paint job, 4 new tires... rebuild the axles, replace all the U and ball joints...

It'd get spendy but when you were done it'd run like a new rig. If you also did the interior it'd also FEEL like a new rig.

Arb, I could certainly use it for my 84, but being a diesl so much is probably different....

did the diesl make it to the 86fsm?

Roll Me Over
bt-dt - Go to a salvage yard, pull a harness, install. Should take about an hour total. Biggest issue is the auto harness is different than the manual - not sure why, but they are.
