does anyone here know how first gen 4runner cruise control works? does it run independantly of the ecu? reason being that I'd like to have cruise on my pickup and I have access to a donor first gen. my 84 is a 22r and doesn't have an ecu. Also are these control units reliable? Or could I should I try for the taco cruise unit? thankyou in advance <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Its pretty much independent, taps into the VSS signal off the back of the mechanical speedo. It works OK, not as well as some of the aftermarket units I've run in other rigs. Its non-adjustable and seems kind of sluggish and you need to overshoot the set speed (like speed up to 70 and then hit the Set button to cruise at 65). Also the controls are pretty lame, no coast function for example, so you need to tap the clutch or brake pedal to disengage the unit. I think you'll need all the wiring harness to go with it as I've heard that non-cruise trucks lack the wiring for it.

I think I'll go aftermarket then. I've dealt with those overshoot ones before and don't want to repeat that experience

I have an Audiovox in my daily driver:
Cruise Control install

and it works well. Its adjustable for gain and sensitivity so you can dial it in to match the engine/vehicle characteristics. I'm halfway tempted to put one in my 4Runner. It has a separate connector that lets you splice into a factory cruise control switch, or you can run it off of its control panel.
