I have a 2000 4Runner limited with the full-time 4wd system (center differential). The problem is that the center-unlocked mode is only available in 4-High, but not in 4Low. Has anyone designed a modification to allow me to unlock my center diff while in 4Low? Right now I use 4Low to pull my boat up the ramp, but the locked center diff is no good for moving the boat around the parking lot even though it would help a great deal to use 4Low.
Any help?

Interesting. I, for one, did not know that. 2001's and 2002's can be open in 4 low. I use that quite a bit actually. I thought the 1999 and 2000 Limiteds were the same. This is the first time I've heard this being brought up. The only thought I would have is to check here on the Sequoia board and see if anyone has done such a thing. They act the same as yours going from high to low range. The only other differece between yours then is that they can't lock the center in high range.

My 2001 SR5 'sport package' has a switch on the dashboard to lock the center diff in 4WD Low. You don't have this switch?

They changed the system in 01. the 00's LTD are automatically locked in 4LO. The toggle on the tcase lever is for 4H only (AWD/4WD). I always thought that the 01's and 02 operated the same, but it's pretty cool that you can run 4LO with an open center.

Yes, the 2001 and later system is different and does allow you to unlock the center in 4low. I even considered trading mine in when I heard about that - I guess Toyota heard a few complaints like mine and did something about it.
So my problem stands- how to I unlock the center while in 4low? It seems there would be a wire somewhere I could tap (much like the DRL mod) and add a switch.

Do the Full Time 4WD 4Runners still have the ADD? If so you could also rig a switch to disable the ADD solenoids and then have a quasi 2WD LO.
For that matter, do manual hub Taco's have the ADD unit but disabled?? If not then someone like Marmot could swap to a complete floating shaft for strength.

An interesting thought. Actually, 2WD Low would probably work fine in my situation as most people are pulling their boats around the lot with 2WD pickup trucks anyway. Of course, when it comes time to pull up the ramp they also have some trouble with not spinning a wheel...
