I don't know what in the world the deal is. Just the other day. I started the ole 22RE up and it knocked and knocked until the oil pressure gauge started to read pressure. It's done it for like 2 weeks now and it's not getting any better. Does anyone have an idea of what may be going on here? Bad oil pump?

i know my 22r if it sits for more than a week the oil all runs down in the pan and takes a few seconds for it to get back up top and quiet down the valvetrain.

maybe yours is a brother to mine hehehe

another thing maybe you broke a timing chain guide and the chain is rubbing against the case.

The chain and guides only have 20k on them after they threw last time. I inspected them with the valve cover off about a week ago. They looked fine to me. That's why I'm still stumped. Thanks for the reply!

Ya but did you look at them AFTER it started clacking? Did you check oil pressure (I'm thinking rods.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> )

To see if they had broken. Someone told me a while back that it sounded like rod bearings to them. Oil pressure has nothing to do with the valve train. The 22RE is overhead cam so it has no hydraulic lifters that would maybe be noisy upon startup until oil pressure builds, very common with older V8's and such with a lifter push rod set up. Most likely the noise is the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. It could be going bad and it will take longer than usual to quiet the chain down on start up.

Ok, check this out.... First, do you have a toyota oil filter on your engine? the factory oil filters have a check valve in them that keep oil in the passage to the timing chain tensioner... it is a little known secret that the timing chain tensioner is opperated by oil pressure.... if you are running a cheap oil filter, it probably does not run a check valve in it. therefore, the timing chain will flop around until oil pressure can build and the tensioner will come into play.

hope this helps...
