Power Antenna Modifications, the quest of knowledge #365585 12/18/03 08:16 PM

Hi, I purchased this switch to put in my 4 Runner to be able to put my power antenna up and down while 4 wheeling, or using an aftermarket CD changer without the power antenna going/being up. I thought it would only have a few leads on it that I would have to trouble shoot, but it turns out it has 6. The switch controls the antenna and is also lights up with the interior lights are on at night. Anyone know enough about this to be dangerous? Can you please help me lable my graphics so I can put this thing in?

Thanks!

Body Damage is Cool
If I had the switch and an ohmmeter I could tell you, but I can't tell too much from the pic. Sorry

Roll Me Over
you really dont need that complicated switch.

you just cut the power going from the head unit to the power antenna and that lowers it...

so a SPST switch outta do it...

Getting the Wheeling Fever
...ah yes, but the factory switch looks cool <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Is this the Landcruiser switch Sarg? and do you have the part number for it please?

Now to get your antenna working... as has been suggested, you'll need a multimeter to check the pinouts on the switch. I would suggest removing the little globe (so you have access to the globe contacts) and working out which pins are for the light. Then, with the globe still removed, work out which pins are for each switch. The reason I would remove the globe is that they are often connected to a 'common' point with the switch contacts and your multimeter will therefore give you 'false' readings as it will register continuity through the globe.

Did you draw that diagram yourself? if the switch is from a Landcruiser, someone over in the 'cruiser forum with a Factory Service Manual should have the pinouts for it.

Thanks for the info guys.

Yep, drew it myself from what I could see, and the switch is for a Landcruiser.

The part number is: 84760-60030. I got it for about $52.00. I mail ordered them from Daytona Toyota in Florida through Steve Dionne. Thought 52 was a pretty good price since everywhere else was quoting me 70+ bucks. Once I get all the leads figured out, I'll lable them, and publish them here.

Ok, assuming left to right is 1-6.

When Up is pressed:
1-2 Open
1-3 Open
1-4 Open
1-5 Open
1-6 Shorts
2-3 Shorts
4-5 Shorts

When Down is pressed:
1-6 Shorts
2-5 Shorts
3-4 Shorts

Nothing Pressed
1-6 Shorts
2-4 Shorts
2-5 Shorts
4-5 Shorts

Ok all you electricians, What does it all mean?

I think it's important you work out what pins are connected to the light globe.
If you unscrew the globe you will be able to see the contacts inside the hole. Connect your meter between each of the globe contacts while checking for continuity with each of the six pins.
As mention before, leave the globe out so it doesn't cause any 'problems' while you check all the pins.

As for what you've checked so far, all I could work out is that pins 1 & 6 are probably for the light.
Also, according to your diagram, pins 2 & 3 are joined together anyway so they can be treated as a single connection.

The fact that pins 2/3, 4 & 5 are all 'shorted' when nothing is pressed had me stuck.

If you let me know which year the switch is from, I can look up the wiring diagram and let you know which wires go where.
