Coming from the full size world a few thoughts. All your tire size ratings on axles are for full sized trucks. The Dana 44 max tire size is 35's, the dana 60 is 39's. Rockwells are 44's and up. However my personal experience is to keep the front open and really never have any issues at all. I did a 1 ton swap on last truck and could drive a front wheel onto a power pole and pull the truck up with 39's. The d-60 is very stout.
200:1 ratio to run big tires? I had 4.56's and stock t-case. The v-8 torque made up for the rest. Compression braking was enough to keep under control.
You guys cant use chevy stuff because the diff is on the wrong side anyways. And for the record a d-60 , 14 bolt FF combo with 4.56's and rear detroit are in every CUCV made. If you cant find locally then Boyce equipment will ship to your door for $3k. This is the non-refurbished price. Remember you can get a highly modified Sammi for cost of a SAS in montero. Plenty of after market and plenty of power with tracker motor swap. (Included in the highly modified part.)

I can find dirt cheap 14 bolt ff's in all my local yards, I looked. The hard part is lifting it into the truck.

The axles from a 78-79 F350 would be a perfect match, if you wanted to go all out. They are high pinion so they would go great with a swb, and they are pass side drop. Also no balljoints, it is a kingpin axle.

Combine that with a 4.3 swap, with a chevy tcase... mmmmmmm yummy.

Some day, I just have to get school done first. Then the nice shop will fall into place.

I dont understand this logic at all. I enjoy owning a mitsubishi as much as the next guy. However, if you are going to offroad the truck, and take the time and money make it more capable, it is the performance and durability that maters, not what make the parts came from.

Along the same line of thought, why stick after market springs, or differentials in the truck. Why put 33's on the truck they arent stock.

Getting the rig over the obstacle is the end all objective, regardless of what pushes it over.

The D-60 is the money axle. I got my 14ff from boyce for $700?? but it had the detroit and 4.56's and they rewelded the perches to the 1/2 ton width for me. I see them around here for $100. If I did it again I would get a 14ff out of a 1 ton van since they are wider than the trucks. Decreases turning radius I guess.
