Why buy 4 banger if you going to spend tons of $$$ making it stronger? #372021 01/02/04 01:11 AM

Why do people buy 2.7 liter 4 cylinder engines and then want to spend tons of $$$$ and time beefing them up? Why not just buy the V6. I never understood that. The 2.7 is great if you don't need the extra power, so I understand why people would buy the 2.7. I just don't see why someone would buy if they want to spend thousands on superchargers and exhuasts and air intake things the day after they bough the 4 cylinder. Why not save money and time and just buy the V6?

The 6 banger is only marginally more powerfull and the 2.7 is a stronger, more reliable, straight-forward engine. Its old school technology is tried and true toyota quality.

Back in 95 I bought the 2.7 because after getting the 4 wheel drive and the extra cab that's all I could afford at the time.
And believe it or not after installing a K&N intake system and a high flow exhaust system. I can run even with my buddy that has the 6 cyl. That is until I put in 5.29 percision gears in it.

The 2.7L has the same HP as the 3.0 had, and isn't quite the POS the 3.0 is, altho' I'm starting to see some sludge issues slowly starting to appear as these get mileage on them.

FWIW, for me to get a 4 banger long block reworked at the local machine shop is $1500, vs. the $3000 they want for the 6 bangers. That's the issue for me down the road if I ever buy a Taco.

I think you'd get a lot of people questioning these comments. Marginally more powerful? Almost 30% more horsepower, with the option for almost 300 if done right. And there are more 2.7 problems that I've heard of than 3.4.

Hope your jokeing with your comment about the 2.7 haveing more problems than the 3.4. Don't know where you got your info but you can go to any Tacoma site on the internet and ask which one has less problems and i can guarantee you it will not be the 3.4 and never will be. The 2.7 has outlasted them for many years. Also ask any Tacoma michanic which one is the most reliable engine.

I heard the 3.4 is more reliable then the 2.7. On this board itself there is a thread about "hard knock" coming from a lot of 2.7s. Many people with 2.7s think there could be a recall from the hard knock or pining so many of them get. So many people complaining about the metalic pinging sound is what drove me to get the 3.4. Also, a 30% power increase is great, and they do not make a supercharger for the 2.7 so you don't have the option for that particular upgrade.

p.s. I think all Toyota vehicels are great no matter what the engine size is.

[hint]yes they do make a supercharger for the 2.7[/hint]
But yah, to get the 3.4 to 300hp you'd have to add the SC, 7th injector, and intake, headers, exhaust, and probably more... like bigger valves or something...

It would be hard to get any of the toyota engines to 300 hp because things don't add up like they think they are. Like a 5% increase and a 10% increase idealy with a mod won't equal 15%, it will equal less.
