Some awesome scenery. Well, let me be the first to stop you then. It was alot of fun, BUT. Utah is having a HUGE snow year. Salt Lake has had 2x its annual snowfall ALLREADY this winter! It snowed several times while we were there, including a whopper Friday night. I have been to Moab several times in the past at winter, and wheeled usually with family members on the usual tourist trails like White Rim. While I have seen snow, never a conistant 4-6"+ at the higher desert elevations. Even the big blizzard on Hole-N-The-Rock in 99 that dropped a foot, melted the next morning. I was ready to turn around on Metal Masher(and did at Widow Maker). The slickrock had a layer of ice, covered with snow, dicey to say the least and I quickly crossed off a large portion of area trails for the trip. Even the easy loops I did in Arches resulted in some intense moments, including a cliff side emergency " When in Doubt, Gas Her Out" due to sliding in the snow. Hiking is not much fun when its freezing either... The cloudy skies.... Come on Spring! Anyone who is interested I can provide more details on the nice Arches loop I did. I did not do it exactly like the Wells guide, but you can cover a large portion of Arches with the loop.

If Mirror Gulch was full of snow. It had mostly blown out, but that was the reason I kept hiking after we already found the trail. Just think how bad those tiny spots of snow were in there! Oh, and that large heard of Desert Bighorn was amazing! You just dont see that every day. The 100 or so Mule Deer we saw later, but 20+ Big Horn

2 things:
1. YES, cut your exhaust off at an angle!
2. I don't much see the point in SAS for anything but the most hardcore of rock crawling. Many of us go wherever we please on any type of recreational trail imaginable on IFS and 33" tires. Lloyd has for years until his recent 35" upgrade, I presently do with a long wheelbase and open diffs. (really need rocker protection though!!)
A solid axle has advantages on extremely rough stuff, but it's not even worth considering if you haven't done lockers, armor, and 33"+ tires first.

I was going through some of my 4x4 tapes I shot over the years and came across a trip thru the mirror gulch trail. Right behind me was a pair of then brand new (88) Monteros, One of em a silver 2dr Raider. Makes me wonder how long Highmtn has had his monty Then , as now, whomever owned the 2dr, 'walked' mirror and most everything else that day LOL. seer

You can make one if you have the tools or you can buy one for a measley ~$400-450 (rack, floor, roof mounts, etc.) Yup, them puppies aint cheap!! Wow, that was 2 years before I started going to Moab! Be neat to see that historic footage! What was Widow Maker like then? I think Rock Chucker was some tiny ledges as well, and the main route? seer
