912's vs 919's #372975 01/04/04 01:15 AM

Is there any downside to putting OME 919's rather than 912's on a 94 trooper that will never tow or haul anything other than the occasional rear seat passenger.

Someone from this board has put on the 919's cant remember who , oh ya, Conman did. The 919's from what I have heard add the 3" of lift for a Trooper rather than useing 1" poly bushing spacers on the rear coil springs. The 912's only yield 2" of lift, but you need the poly spacers to achieve 3".

Hope this helps.

ummm i was under the impression that the 919's were a HD coil, providing the same 1.5"'s of lift for the trooper as the 912's, except they are a "tighter" spring made for heavier loads but still equal lift

I put the 919s on my 2002 Trooper. They are the same 1.5 inch lift, but are a stiffer shock. I never tow anything and rarely haul any weight either, but the ride is so much better, and definitely not too stiff. I have the Rancho RS 5000s, and it's all good... To me there is no downside at all.

Yep that was me. Tad from PlanetIsuzoo.com was the first to go with the 919. I had both 912 and 919 and there is a difference between the two. the 912 was softer, maybe a tad stiffer than the stock coils and got me almost 2" of lift over stock(even after a year it was still close to 2"). I switched from RS9000 to all OME HD shocks and the 919 coils in rear. It was almost 1" higher than the 912!(which meant it was over 2.5"+ over stock height). IIRC, the 919 are suppose to be the same coil but with higher preload which is probably where I got the extra height over the 912. The 919 and OME HD shocks are def. much stiffer than the RS9000/912 combo. When I first changed over, I was thinking of switching the rear shocks to the non HD OMEs and going back to the 912. But now living with this setup for 6 months, I'm keeping the setup as I like the firmness of the truck now as it handles better on-road. Plus now when I goto the beach, it does not bottom out like the 912/rancho setup did.
Two downfalls is that if it's a choppy road, you def. feel how firm the setup is. The other downfall is that it did not settle at all so the Trooper has a slight rake cause the rear is higher. I'm not sure what I'm going to do as I don't want to crank the T-bars anymore.

I think ARB's recommendation if it's a daily driver is the HD Shocks up front and the Comfort shocks in the rear and the 912 coils. I would probably say go with that if you don't carry much stuff and don't tow often. But my Wife who drives the Trooper every day does not complain about the ride and the baby seems fine with it too. Only complaining she does is that she can't park in some parking garages as the Trooper now is over 6'3" with the 265/70 tires. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,
Con

Conman, how much weight do you carry in the back on a regular basis, including trailer hitch (my Valley hitch is ~50 lbs, for example)? Were your measurements made with the truck loaded or unloaded?

Thanks,

Ed

Normally the only load that is on the Trooper is a baby seat(a baby sometimes) and a stroller. I have a Hidden Hitch and have my trusty Indy4x bumper protector(15pounds?). Add maybe 10 pounds for jumper cables, first aid kit, and some cheap hand tools and that's about it. Do note that I have larger than stock tires so that probably smoothed out the ride since they are heavier than stock.

I don't have measurements with me now but I'll check later. They were posted here but since the forum is purged, it's gone so you can't search it anymore.

Off the top of my head, when we posted these numbers my stock was very similar to other's with 2000+ troopers which I think I was around 17.5" from the top of the center cap to the fender flare. Then when I went to 912, it went up to almost 2" in the rear to close to 19.5" I don't have the 919 numbers but it shocked me that it was higher than the 912 when I picked it up from the shop which I was not expecting it higher just a firmer ride.

This is a pic with stock front height and just 912 in the rears: http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/co...1+Trooper&.dnm=OMEstockfront.jpg

http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/co...+Trooper&.dnm=OMEstockfront2.jpg

This is how high I got with just 912 in the rear:
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/conman10000/detail?.dir=/2001+Trooper&.dnm=rearmeasure.jpg
That measurement was from the top of the center cap to the fender flare.

I'll see if I can find pics or measurements after the 919s install and I will remeasure the trooper as well to see if it settled.

Cheers,
Con

Found my stock height number from a 2002 post: http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showf...in=118929&Search=true#Post118942

Fender to top of centercap:
LR 17 1/8
RR 17 3/8
LF 17 1/8
RF 17 /18

So when I put on my 912, it was over 2" but I think settled to just under 2" after a few months. I'll check my 919 height now when I get home.

Cheers,
Con

Thanks for all the input I ordered a set of 912's and went with the N-15 (firm) OME Nitrochargers. Thought that might be a good combination to firm up the912's without going as firm as 919's ??? One thing I know for sure from reading here, they will be a massive improvement over 10 year old coils and Gabriels
