Super Swamper tires? UPDATE! #373408 01/04/04 11:49 PM

Has anyone else here had problems with the SSR series tires?
Mine have become oval! The tires are roughly 4 years old with lots of miles on. I know its time to change them but have never encountered this on a tire before.

Mine used to get very bad flat spots in cold weather. I can't believe you have had a set for 4 years. Mine hardly lasted one.

4 years old? If they are 4 years old they must've been sitting for a long while, in which case they may have flat spotted. What brought you to the conclusion that they are oval? Rough ride? How often did you rotate them? What kind of air press. are you running? And when you say you a lot of miles on em, how much is alot?

Someone might want to correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, tires can be oval as a defect, but good tires do not just "become" oval.

I have had very good experience with 3 sets of SSRs, 1 set of the 31X12.50X15 and I am currently on my second set of 35X14.5X15 and they are great. They are quiet, easy to balance, ride smooth and I got 43k miles out of my first set.

That would be the exact opposite of my experience with them. Mine had a harsh ride, loud as hell, and very difficult to balance. Traction was great though...

A buddy of mine used to run SSR's. We concluded that they suck. Here's a pic.

On another forum my friend posted this about his SSR's:

One trail was all the lugs would last for on SSRs (if the sidewall wasn't punctured). After that they were essentially missing quite a few lugs and looked like crap - generally they still held air though. Of course, this is on a 5000lb rig and evidently they do much better on lighter vehicles. I did have multiple sidewall tears with mine and I have been MUCH happier with the MTRs than the SSRs but as always YMMV. The SSRs did seem to hook up fairly well but certainly for me they were inadequate. Honestly, with all the new tires available, such as Krawlers, Xterrains (the 37's in particular), PJs, MTRs, maybe the new Maxxis, and the new Toyo's and Nitto's I would be hard pressed to ever buy another set of tires from Interco for my rig. Before I bought them a couple of years ago I found nothing but positive reviews. Boy, was I disappointed after I got them. Maybe I just had a bad dozen or so. (Be sure to get the replacement warranty if you go that way)! One more thing - this was with 37" SSRs. Other sizes may not have these issues so as always YMMV!

I dont think the SSRs were ever meant to be a hard core off road tire. It is obvious those tires were put through some abuse. The SSRs were designed to be a quieter, smoother riding alternative to the SuperSwamper , with siping for better wet road traction. Your buddy would have been better off with TSL/SXs, which were designed for extreme off road conditions.

This guy is just wondering why his tires went oval on him after 4 years. Again, I dont think round tires can "become" oval. One thing I do know is that if any of my tires lasted for 4 years, I'd just be extrememly happy because I got my moneys worth.

i think it depends what they are being compared to though. I am used to running TSL rads, Boggers, and bias mudders. So in comparision, the SSRs have very nice manners and are very quiet. Maybe you just got a bad set, or i was lucky enough to get good sets.

My 35x12.50 MTRs are super quiet, ride great, wear MUCH better, seem to have better sidewalls and still have great traction off road. Not to mention I think they were roughly the same price and my MTRs are much bigger. I would never buy another SSR.

Well...its obvious that the point of my post was missed, SO, Anyway, I am still waiting for more information because I am wanting to know how he came to the conclusion that his tires are oval and if this is even possible
