Getting the Wheeling Fever
I heard there are plugs available to put in the jet valve holes of the regular ones? The head on mine is still good at 150,000+ miles, but the Jet valve carb is being cranky (I have a Carter waiting to go on)

Build your truck the head men say, but it must be built in such a way...

I though about doing this with my spare from the car. I think you would need to do a full tear down and I was going to fill the holes with my mig gun and machine smooth. I looked at the clearwater casting and the holes looked filled.

Umm, don't forget to install the cam plug in the back of the new head before you put it on the engine. It comes with the gasket set, in fact, Fel-Pro includes two. One of them is supposed to be for the "early" engines, and one is for the "later" models (years are listed in the instructions with the gasket set). On mine, the "early" model plug was the only one that would fit, even though I have a "later model" engine. That saves you from the "fountain of oil" effect when you start the engine back up and set the timing. Trust me on this one...

Just finished a complete rebuild of my 87s 2.6 on Christmas eve. Started out as a 212k mile tune-up. Than one thing lead to another. Two plugs were coolant fouled so I started investigating why. Cracks between valves in 2 + 3 cylinders and a bad ridge in number 3 cylinder. So $1200 tune-up. After all the good things IÆve read about them I decided to go with a Clearwater head. Received good service from Pat. Two thoughts however, the exhaust manifold to down tube gasket I received with the gasket set I bought from them was wrong. Single large hole instead of two smaller holes, so the wife had to make an extra trip to the stealeship. Just something to check for. The other thing that bothered me was the threads extending past the end of the spark plugs. Wish IÆd thought to take a picture. Anyway I grabbed my trusty dremel and blended these excess threads into the chamber as this looks to me like a possible hot spot. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just being silly. Ps fasteddy <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> nice post .

Sort of, the threads IÆm talking about are those that are just visible on the left hand side of the spark plug hole. These are the partial threads that extend beyond the threaded body of the spark plug. They just look like the type of place that would gather carbon over time. IÆd not expect any problems in the near future however over a period of yearsà Just one of those little things that kind of bug me. Too many years working on aircraft.

Those bothered me too, but I've never seen any carbon build up there. Funny, my son is A&P liscensed (just graduated form Embry-Riddle in Daytona), and noticed the same thing...

I replaced about 15 head gaskets on my carb 85 D-50 42d before the turbo conversion, so I've looked at a bunch of seasoned heads, and no carbon, even in the cylinders not steam blasted by the coolant leak... (I finally learned how to do the head gaskets - turbo motor never blew one).

Warning - check the block deck for flatness, too!

Get some labels and waterproof markers and label all the lines and wires to be disconnected. Also a digital camera to document everything before removal after labeling. May seem like overkill but you will be thankful when you start the reassembly. More you label and mark now easier it will be when up reassemble. Also I used ARP studs and it made reassembly easier for me being a true novice.
Enjoy,
